Q: please, help! please, help! please, heeelp!

Imagine I'm a caveman and so this "iPad" surrounding language is alien to me.

(because that's exactly how it is )

My iPad arrived 24 hours ago, but it feels like a million years, and as I have not opened it yet, I'm already thinking of returning it and forgetting the whole thing.

Can I do this:

Create iTunes (or whatever the process is called) using the iPad with Apple ID. Then download iTunes on my computer and use it to buy stuff for ipad (apps, newspapers, books, music) and also to put music off the computer (and usb) onto itunes library.

Then, on my iPad I will go onto iTunes and will access all that purchased stuff?

Nobody seems to write or talk about the essence of this whole system, they only talk about the manuals.

Did you already setup the new iPad?

    First you can create a new Apple ID;

    1. Open iTunes. If you do not have iTunes, you can download iTunes here.
    2. From the Store menu, choose Create Account. Click Continue on the resulting screen.
    3. To proceed, you'll need to agree to the Terms and Conditions. Once you've read and agreed to the Terms and Conditions, click the checkbox next to "I have read and agree to these terms and conditions."
    4. Click Continue.
    5. Complete the form to create your free Apple ID (which is what you will use to log in to the iTunes Store).
    6. The form includes security questions for your protection, as well as an optional rescue email address.
    7. Once you've filled out the form, click Continue.
    8. If you receive a warning that the email address you entered is already associated with an Apple ID, follow these instructions about using an existing Apple ID instead.
    9. Provide a valid payment method and billing address. You will not be charged until you make a purchase.
    10. Once you've provided all the required billing information, click Continue.
    11. You will need to verify your email address. Check your email for a verification email from Apple.
    12. In the verification email you receive from Apple, click the Verify Now link.
    13. You'll be taken to the Apple ID page to verify your email address.
    14. Enter your email address and the password you used to create your Apple ID. Then, click Verify Address.

After that you can connect your iPad with iTunes on your computer and follow the instruction to setup your new iPad.

God bless you, man! For taking time to write all this.. Thank you!

Maybe the help is finally coming my way....

(i really hope Apple 'pays' you for doing all this...)

Unfortunatelly, it does not answer my question, as, obviously, i should have made it more clear, what I need. This sentence I wrote is what I wanted to know: Then, on my iPad I will go onto iTunes and will I access all that purchased stuff?  I missed word "I" and so I meant- access iTunes (and all what's on it) using iPad.

My situation: Computer is mine, ipad is for my mother . she lives in another country. I bought her an ipad, and I want to fully set it up, with some music and usefull apps before I post it to her. I do not want to "connect" my computer to her ipad. And I know she will not be able to do sync with her own computer even if she had iTunes on it.

So, do I need to avoid using iTunes (can I?), or what would be the answer to my original question?

I have limited experience with the IPad myself but I do think that the only way you are going to be able to get any kind of music onto your IPad is through one of two ways.

    1.  Download the iTunes onto your computer where you can pull the music from your collection of CD's or other digital forms you have and then sync it with the IPad to get them uploaded.

    2.  Purchase the music through the Apple store directly from the IPad and download them to it.

Using Option 1 would be the easiest and once you are done you could go in and uninstall the iTunes program from your program if you did not want to keep it.  Keep in mind iTunes can be used on your computer as well for playing music, videos, TV shows and radio stations while you do other work.

Quite simply, yes you can avoid using iTunes in any computer if you choose to do so. When you set up the iPad, set up an iCloud account and backup to iCloud only, and you can use the iPad that way.

You can create an Apple ID for her on the iPad as well - but be very careful about something ... if she is not going to use a credit card with the iPad - set the iPad up without creating the Apple ID - skip that step - and then set up the ID after the iPad has been activated.

This explains how to set up an ID without a credit card. You start the process by trying to download a free app first.

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2534

You do not want to download content into your iTunes library and sync it to her iPad, there is no need to do that and that will cause problems later on.

Just download all content onto the device itself - do not use iTunes on the computer at all. You have access to purchased apps in the app store purchased tab, access to iTune purchased content in the iTunes purchased tab, and the same goes for the iBooks app store.

Read this about setting up a brand new iPad before you start to set up the iPad.

    Hello, Demo,

I found your message very useful. Thank you for your help.

But now I came up with even more questions. I really hope you can be my saviour as you sound quite smart. I have numbered it, so you know, I'm not just "thinking aloud", I'm actually asking.

Could you, please, just explain what you meant here: You do not want to download content into your iTunes library and sync it to her iPad, there is no need to do that and that will cause problems later on.

    1. The part that's underlined, did you mean- there will be problems if I don't set up iTunes and do the sync?

Also, that second link you sent; in the article it says, "I don't necessarily need an Apple ID, while doing setting-up, but I will not be able to use iTunes". 2. But there are other places I can buy apps or music, isn't there?

And, you wrote- if she is not going to use a credit card with the iPad. How can I know that in advance? Also, I know for sure, that at the beginning I will want to buy some newspaper apps and little music, and that's it. 3. Can I just pay for it "as I go"? 4. And what about paying for something like flights on the website, does it still function as you would do on computer, through web browsing?

And as a separate question- what happens if you 'skip that step' and don't add the credit card. 5. Can you just add it later?

Well, sure I would get some sort of medal for giving you all these questions, but will you get the gold for the answers? You people out there giving all your time to help strangers really deserve it. It took me over 20 min just to write this.. I hope you get some sort of reward for your hard work.

All this personal information sharing is really off putting... They even have our personal photos and files somewhere in the "sky"... Weird and scary... I wonder, as usb and CD disappear, how are they going to hide the secret information.. in the cloud? .. so hackers can get it in matter of minutes...?

I obviously know almost nothing about this stuff and probably sound quite stupid...

Hopefully, I can explain this clearly. Just post back with more questions if you have them.

The reason that I suggested that you not sync content from your iTunes library is that you will be using your Apple ID and you made it sound like you want your mom to have her own Apple ID.

Any content that you buy with your Apple ID can only be updated by using that ID and the password associated with the ID. In other words - mom will have to use your ID for the apps that you buy for her when she wants to update them. That in and of itself is not the end of the world, but you don't ever want to have to use two Apple ID's and there are reasons beyond that I just explained. It just makes it easier if you only use one Apple ID.

If your mom is going to use a credit card and you know and have all of the information for that card, then go ahead and set up an Apple ID for her. If your mom is not going to use a credit card and only wants to download free content, it is easier to create the Apple ID by downloading a free app first and you can't do that during activation. It's easier to set up the ID without a credit card from the start - than it is to set up the ID and then realize that you don't want to use a credit card and then have to remove the credit card details.

You do have the option of skipping the Apple ID set up when you activate the device and that is why I suggested that - you can see that in the link that I posted above. You can set up the ID and add the credit card after you activate the device. Look in the section about setting up as a brand new iPad.

Create an Apple ID and iTunes account on the iPad

However, yes, you must have an Apple ID in order to download any content - free or purchased - from the App Store, iTunes or the iBook Store on the iPad so at some point, your mom will need an Apple ID.

If you want to buy some apps for your mom, you can gift them to her from the app store or you can send her an iTunes gift card. Once again, I just don't want to see you associating your Apple ID to your mom's iPad.

You can also pay for it as you go by setting up and iTunes allowance. That is covered in the iTunes Gift Options.

Read any one of these in order to find out how to gift an app from the iPad or how to use iTunes gift options.

    Gift an app from ipad

    iTunes Gift Options

You can use the Safari web browser for the most part just like you do on a computer, book flights, pay for them, do your banking and whatever else that you do on the internet using a web browser. Plus ... banks, airlines and those types of business have their own apps for mobile devices.
