Installing of two SSDs in Mac mini mid 2010 (core i5 2.3GHz)

I have mac mini mid 2011 with code i5@2.3GHz

I have tried to intall two SSD disks in my mac... but without success:

I have opened my mac, and installed both two SSD disks (OCZ Agillity 3, 120GB). Everytning was good, till I turned on my computer: both SSDs are recognised, but one of them (this on the second SATA port) I'm not able to partiton or format.

I have opened my mini again, connected the disk to my Macbook Pro, and installed OS X 10.8 without any problems. I have put it back in the mini - same problem again: SSD is recognised, partition not...

At last, I have installed my original HDD (500GH Hitachi) on the second drive bay, and now it works fine...

Is it possible to have two SSD disks installed in my mac mini?

My plan is to install two SSDs and to configure RAID-0.

Second one works fine...

If I install one of the SSDs on the second drive bay it is recognised as a SSD, but I'm not able to format it.

Doesn't matter how it is installed: only the SSD, or SSD + HDD.

If the SSD is installed on the "primary" port (this one where the original hdd is factory installed) - it works.

If I move it on the second "free" port - it is recognised, but disk utility is not able to do anything with the SSD.

If SSD is already formated - it is accessible, but always when you try to copy any data from/to this SSD - it always returns IO error...

If the original HDD is installed on this port - it works fine... and this SSD works fine if it is installed on the "primary" port.

Mac mini mid 2011 models has no Optical drive.

Both two ports are 6GB...

I have found some sources, where they says this is a problem of OCZ....

This is the port where SSD works:

Hi dkmi (or anyone experiencing the same issue),

Have you been able to solve your issue since then, or at least know if it's possible to put 2 SSDs in your 2011 Mac mini? I'm asking since I'm planning to do the same thing in a few days...

Honestly your experience scares me as I already experienced this with my other 2012 Mac mini. With this model, one of the two bays recognizes SSDs without any issue but the other one either cannot format/partition SSD (Samsung 840) or causes SSD to freeze frequently (Crucial).

Let's assume you decide to use only one SSD. Wherever you put your SSD, it'll merge both disks via Fusion Drive, but after separating them in the Terminal, you can install stuff as usual ONLY if your SSD is in the working bay...

Thanks

Still same issue... now, i have upgraded my mac mini to 2012 model, with one OWC Mercury Extreme Pro SSD and in second bay - the original HDD. With two OCZ SSDs only this one in the primary bay works.

OWC support told me it WILL work with two of their SSDs, but this is not tested by me...

That is not how I remember it. One user installed an SSD in the empty upper bay and left HD in lower bay and tried to use the SSD as boot disk and it would not work, Interchanging the drives worked.

To avoid that possible problerm on my 2102 Mini , when I added an SSD I moved the HD to the lower bayand installed the SSD in the upper bay

On the 2011, there may be some odd firmware issue with

with 2 SSDs and an i5 logic board, as this model was only

designed to be shipped with 1 drive. It may have to do with

the actual SATA hardware controller or how the firmware initializes

the controller. It could also have something to do with OSX

and itdeals with the different models.

On the 2012, there can be a similar issue which gets even

more problematic because it may only want to configure

a Fusion drive.

On the server models, they ship with two drives and can actually

be configured with 2 SSDs from the factory, which leads me to

believe that there is an odd quirk in the single drive models that

are causing this issue.

There may also still be an issue with the SSDs used.

BTW, which version of OSX is being installed?
