Aug 7, 2012 6:02 AM in response to Sammich77by Anonymous34,I can't remove the battery with the Retina MBP (to my knowledge). After unplugging it from the outlet it suddenly responded to the power button, which was strange.

Aug 14, 2012 7:54 AM in response to Anonymous34by preludio,Just to say that I experienced this today, too. I unplugged from the outlet and plugged it back in, still no response. Then I tried holding down command-option-PR to start -- wouldn't start. After a few more times hitting the power key, it booted as normal. No idea what's going on
I thought I could detect fans running, but I may have been wrong. (There was a lot of background noise in my office.) According to the console, the Mac was shut down, but I got some weird messages:

Sep 19, 2012 7:17 AM in response to Anonymous34by wjrazavi,One week old Macbook Pro 15" Retina.
Shut it down at home.
Drove to the office.
Tried to boot.
Nothing.
Pressed the power button again and I could tell the screen went darker.
Pressed the power button again and I saw it get a hue of black that made me think it was going to boot.
After 4 attempts (2 with and 2 without power adapter), it finally got to the login.
Then NOTHING, back to being stuck.
Tried that a couple more times.
Finally booted.
Here I am finally posting something on the support site.
I'm frustrated.

Sep 21, 2012 11:10 AM in response to wjrazaviby preludio,Have you done the latest firmware update? I believe it came with 10.8.2, which just shipped this week. It's possible this will solve the problem.
Or you could try resetting the SMC:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
Both of these might address what sounds like a power issue.
Otherwise, calling Apple is probably a good idea. Your computer is very new, and it's possible that there is a hardware issue. If it's a sporadic problem, this can be difficult to diagnose (i.e., convince Apple to fix for free). Once you make a report to Apple via AppleCare, you will get a case number. If they fix it, great. If it happens again, call Apple again and refer to the case number to report another incident. This will allow Apple to see the whole picture and will help them diagnose and fix the problem.
Good luck! My power issue seems to have fixed itself.

Feb 22, 2013 7:43 AM in response to Anonymous34by kmai,I know this post is from back in September of last year, but I wanted to comment for posterity to say what worked for me with my July 2012 retina MBP refusing to turn on. From the link preludio posted above: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
Use the "Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own" method (ie., for all Macbook Pros early-2009 and later). Worked perfectly for me:
- Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if it's not already connected.
- On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
- Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
- Press the power button to turn on the computer.

So it's fully charged. I used it without any problems last night, then shut it down. This morning when I tried to turn it on, it won't. I have Lion installed and am up to date with all of the software updates. There is a green light in the AC adapter. What should I do??

Feb 22, 2013 7:46 AM in response to kmaiby milocricket,Umm, I think his problem is fixed, but he forgot to respond.

Feb 22, 2013 7:54 AM in response to milocricketby kmai,Yeah, I figured as much, but I thought I would post what worked for me because I found this thread Googling because I had the same problem. Since there was no "XYZ method worked" post, I thought I would help any other people who might stumble on this thread with similar issues.

Feb 22, 2013 9:59 AM in response to Anonymous34by wjrazavi,Mine turned out to be a bad Graphics Processor.
They replaced my MBP and no more problems.
It sounds like some different issues may be out there and most are fixed with new firmware, but sometimes it just turns out to be a hardware failure.
