No I do not think any of the Mac applications can play the VCD format (Intel Core Duo or G5). Like the poster above has mentioned, you should try downloading VLC Media Player---it plays VCDs for sure, because this is what I use myself... and it's free!

Follow this link to download it and you should be playing your VCDs in no time: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/14738

Well, that's because VCDs are not exactly the format of choice compared to DVDs---maybe Apple feels that the advances in the future will come from DVDs. Remember the original iMacs that did not include a floppy drive and nothing but USB ports? That was quite a shock to users back then but it turned out to be the right move.

That should give you an indication that Apple is always betting on the latest technology even if it is not necessarily the popular choice.

(By the way, if any of these replies have helped you in any way, you can mark them as 'helpful' or 'solved'. this helps other users in finding solutions to similar problems easier---not to mention earning the people who replied some 'points'!)

Playing a Video Compact Disc (VCD)
A Video Compact Disc (VCD) holds more than a compact disc, but less than a DVD. The video stored on a VCD is of a lower quality than video on a DVD, and similar to the quality of video on a VHS videotape. Because VCD video is encoded in MPEG-1 format, you can't use DVD Player in Mac OS X version 10.3 to play a VCD. Instead, use QuickTime Player to view the contents of a VCD.

Insert a VCD in the optical drive of your computer.
Open QuickTime Player, located in the Applications folder.
Choose File > "Open Movie in New Player."
Navigate to the VCD.
Open the MPEGAV folder.
Open the file that ends with ".DAT."
When the movie opens in a new QuickTime Player window, click the Play button to play the movie.

To play Super Video Compact Discs (SVCD), you must use third-party software such as Video LAN Client. You can find information about this software at www.videolan.org.
