Mail unable to connect SMTP using IPv6

Hello,
apparently Tiger's Mail is unable to post to SMTP server using IPv6. This is a big issue here as all the University WiFi access uses IPv6.

Comments and experiences appreciated.

I have no experience with using IPv6 -- is the use of Mail to send the only function not working with it?

Yes, only sending is affected. As far as we have been able to trace, the SMTP server does not receive any connection request (port 25). Reading account using Mail under IPv6 works fine. Other mailers work for sending in the same configuration meaning that Mail is faulty, not the IPv6 stack...

Jean-Luc,

Please give me some general feel and description of how the SMTP is setup, and authenticated in the other mail clients with which it works? What mail clients in particular work with it -- I can perhaps get an idea about what would be needed, if anything, to be different in the setup, when I look at the preference options available in the other mail clients.

Is the Username for setting up the SMTP authentication derived from the longer addresses used in iPV6? My initial research is that normally any issues would manifest in other functions, as well, but the following linked Topic has some discussion specific to Mail:

Hello,

sorry for the delay... In fact SMTP is in a "basic" configuration : no authentication and port 25 used... If I specify the IPv4 address insteed of the name of the SMTP server it works... We have check the SMTP server input and it appears that when IPv6 is active absolutely NO REQUEST is coming from Mail. Turning IPv6 off or specifying explicitly the SMTP IPv4 address in Mail et hop the requests come to the server. Clearly this Mail function is broken under IPv6.

Can you ping the address of your IPv6 based SMTP server, using the ping6 tool in the terminal? Can you access any other IPv6 sites are your university using Safari?

Yes. Only Mail sending is affected... I mean that connection using IPv6 is working at the system and software levels except for Mail for sending email (other mailers work usingIPv6 stack)...

Based on that I would have to agree with you. Unfortunately I don't have an IPv6 accessible SMTP server to test myself.

I can give the name server (IPv6 resolution) instead of its IPv4 address and send Mail. Great
