Transfer of Mac and apps license in private sale

I purchased a Mac pro from a friend, who installed Mac OSX Lion and iWorks and iLife apps. The App store has updates, but will not let me download the apps because he purchased the apps using his iTunes credentials.

I can freely use the current version of the apps, but I cannot apply the updates. Does a private sale of this computer and it's software now belong to me?

What are Apple's terms of private sales?

The software purchased through the App store is the purchasers to use.

Can't resell it.

Though you can run it and use it, the software really isn't yours to use.

No checks, however, except when you want an update.

A machines transferable software is limited to the software discs that were shipped with it when new.
