When connecting the Ethernet cable as suggested above the TC still seems to use the wireless option which simply times-out after a while given the size of my initial backup. Do I need to change anything to allow for the initial backup to be over cable?
Turn off wireless in the computer.
Also turn off wireless in the Time Capsule.
Avoids alien access to it.

Hopefully, you have not configured your TC to "join" your wireless network using a wireless connection. If you have, the Ethernet ports on the TC are not enabled, so backups are going to occur over wireless no matter what.
Please detail how you have the TC connected to your network. There should be an Ethernet cable from your modem or modem/router connected to the WAN "O" port on the TC for starters.
