wireless performance with bluetooth

Hi all,

I'm wondering if anyone else has come across this or can offer any suggestions... I have a new macbook pro with retina display and have noticed that the wireless performance (watching in activity monitor) will run at about 800k/sec and then when i join a mighty mouse via bluetooth that speed will drop to 2k / 3k/sec; turn the mighty mouse off and the speed will pick up to 800k/sec again.

It's pretty predictable and will do it every time. I've found the following Apple article about Macbook Air's:

http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:qNAEHzvazssJ:support.apple. com/kb/TS1809+&cd=2&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=uk

And I know i'm running a 2.4Ghz wireless network (provided by Sky) so i suspect this is the issue...

Anyone else seen the same issues - anything you can do to help improve the problem?

Thanks in advanced,

Ian

Hmmmm, can't comment on that issue but I do notice that with OS 10.8 my bluetooth mouse does have a tendancy to drop it's pairing after a reboot.

(Psssst...hey Apple....an you add this to the bug list for 10.8 and maybe fix it in 10.8.1? It's annoying but not a show-stopper.)

There have been numerous reports of Retina machine having slow connections - or no connection - to wifi when Bluetooth is on. Temporary fix, I suppose, is to turn off Bluetooth and see if you get some speed increases. It sounds like a bug on the Retina display models that was supposed to be 'fixed' with ML, but maybe it hasn't been fixed after all.

While I don't have the newest MBP, I wonder if I can help diagnose the problem as I use Bluetooth for my mouse every day. I've reviewed the problem description and I'm confused about something. Is Bluetooth being used for the network transport as well as other connections (e.g., mouse)?

I'm using standard wifi (5.2) for my network connection and I dont notice anything being off....

I do notice that my Bluetooth mouse drops its pairing when I restart my computer tho.....

Hi All,

Attached are some screen shots whilst trying to copy an iso across the network... it seems that when bluetooth is on and with something connected to it (mighty mouse in my case) you can hardly get any packets through the wifi... I wasnt even able to do a google search to remind myself on how to take a screen shot.

Firstly with bluetooth on...

then off and run for a bit...

then back on again and run for a bit...

The only thing i cannot test is running it with a 5ghz network to see if that removes the interfearance with bluetooth.

Thanks,

Two questions come to mind....

1) what channel are you using for wifi?

2) can you change the channel to something else?

Not sure if that will help but it certainly will not make it worse.

If you don't already have it, I strongly suggest you look for a free copy if the Mac version of NetStumbler....I think it's called iStumbler or something like that (too lazy to go upstairs and fire up the MBPS to look...as I write this from my iPad). This way you can see what channels your neighbors are using and you can stay away from them as well.....

I think I am seeing the same issue when using my Jambox via the bluetooth connection. Jawbone finally got some updated software for their speaker system, which seems to connect fine, but now the wireless is going in and out or barely connected.

Just "fixed" the issue with USB 3.0 by going to a Thundebolt drive. Now the "fix" is to turn off bluetooth or buy a 5GHz router?

Not what I expected from a $3000 laptop, that is for sure. Oh, wait, plus the Thunderbolt drive, plus HOURS of time (priceless), plus?

Apple, what gives?

Also, does anyone know how to submit a bug to Apple directly? Should I get on the phone?

Just tried changing my wireless channel from 13 to 1 and can now actually use the internet and mighty mouse at the same time but you notice when you're trying to pull something large over the wireless that the connection only happnens in bursts which is ok for web browsing but a real pain for a file download... hopefully apple will be able to sort this one out!

I suspected that would resolve the issue and suspect it's hardware based. Bluetooth is also on the 2.4Ghz frequency range and would seem they are causing interfearance with each other but when you're on 5Ghz you resolve the conflict.

I tried with Apple support earlier and they tried a reset of the smc and clearing of the ram cache but this didnt make any difference and suggested that I take it to an Apple Retail Store althought I suspect it's either something which will end up in a recall or will never get fixed... rubbish!!

Me...personally...I use both a Netgear (3500) and the Apple AirPort Extreme for my home network.

If you're a current user / fan of Linksys, they're good too but the price point for some of their products have risen faster than I have liked.

The AirpPort Extreme is small, easy to configure and I've never had a problem. It's a little expensive IMHO but once it's set-up...you really don't need to do anything.

Same thing with the Netgear device.

I'm not a big fan of encryption as it cuts your effective bandwidth...instead I use MAC address filtering and lock the config down via scans from NESSUS. Unless you steal one of my devices and clone the MAC address...you ain't getting in...simple and effective.

The Apple router deals with MAC filtering in a somewhat "different" way that I've seen others implement such controls before. Not wacky...just...differenet.

If you've ever used Cisco or other devices, the Netgear and Linksys config methods are straightforward and easy to maintain.

From a stability standpoint, I've been reading things about Linksys having some heat issues....can't confirm however.

From an ERP (effective radiated power) standpoint...the 5GHZ implementation on the Apple AirPort is GREAT and you can bind multiple channels for even more throughput.

My recommendation would be the AirPort Extreme. (but it only has 3 1000baseT ports for wired devices)

Wow! Thanks, Scott! I appreciate your time and responses.

Here is the gig for my household network:

Windows 7 PC that my wife and I use - it is wired to my FIOS "modem" router - then I have an older Netgear N wireless router bridged from there. I need three wired connections in the main office, one of which is a "backup" connection for the rMBP. I have an Epson printer on one of the wired connections - just seems to work more reliably as an IP printer connection.

I use the rMBP out in the kitchen, about 30 feet max through two plaster walls.

I think I like the AirPort Extreme idea. They use those at the K-8 where I work and it covers things pretty well for them. I have an iPad and my wife has her iPhone, and we are thinking of Apple TV, so it might be nice to keep leaning the Apple direction.

Now - Apple needs to release the iPhone 5, and I can be assimilated completely by loosing my Android phone.

Still working on finding time to call Apple about this, but these options will help me and make things better in the long run. Just keeps costing more $$!

Thanks again, Scott!
