can i install windows xp on OS X Lion bootcamp?

I read somewhere that Windows 7 can only install of OS X Lion. I have very limited knowledge on Mac OS. Is that mean Windows XP can't be installed on OS X Lion?

MacBook Air (13-inch, Mid 2012), OS X Mountain Lion

Burn a CD WindowsXP.iso on a DVD.

Bootcamp make a 20gb (if you want a smaller, remove the 20gb, and make a smaller formated in FAT)

Startup finds your WindowsXP on the DVD.

Install on bootcamp your XP :-)

Boot Camp (Lion version) will not create a partition for or install Windows XP, and then there are no drivers available for it, please don't post this information, it is incorrect.

Dear Csound1

Did you try it? Please Csound1 don't post information what you didn't comfirm yourself.

It works on my MacBook late 2008 with Moutian Lion.

Bootcamp lion WILL create a bootcamp partition that you CAN use for Windows7 (or XP).

The thing was that during boot it didn't show a XP cd, it did show XP on dvd.

So then I could run the XP install. Formated bootcamp partition in FAT.

And running the installation of XP.

And yes of course you have to be creative and find the older XP drivers.

I used the 10.5.6 bootcamp drivers that are usefull for my 2008 system.

For newer systems XP drivers will be a problem in the future.

Which versions of Windows work with Boot Camp 4.0?

You can use Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium, Microsoft Windows 7 Professional, or Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate with Boot Camp 4.0. Windows XP and Windows Vista are not supported with Boot Camp 4.0.

That's Apple speaking, the official line.

I am happy for you that you found a way to make a 12 year old 32bit operating system work in an unsupported configuration.

You should read the Bootcamp installation and help manuals. Here are the system requirements. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1899.

XP is not supported by Lion nor Mountain Lion.

If you managed to put together all the drivers that work, great. But XP is not supported and in my opinion is not worth the effort to find all the drivers, if they exist.

Hi Lucosmic,

Do you happen to know how I can get an older game - Medal of Honor Allied Assault - to work on my MacBook Pro? I've installed Vista (by manually installing the drivers created by the bootcamp CD - which was very possible to do...) however, I get the following error: unable to load opengl subsystem. Also - my headset doesn't work with TeamSpeak 3. :/

Looking forward to any information that will help.

MOHAA was released in 2002 and I am not aware of revision for modern hardware and systems. It should work with XP but who knows what happens with Vista or 7. You could try adjusting the properties to XP if you have a later Windows version.

Medal of Honor: Allied Assault System Requirements

  • Windows XP/Me/95/98/2000
  • 733 MHz Intel® Pentium® III or 700 MHz AMD® Athlon™ processor
  • 128 MB RAM;
  • 8x CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive
  • 3 GB free hard disk space plus space for saved games (additional space required for Windows swap-file);
  • 16 MB OpenGL capable video card using an NVIDIA™ TNT2, GeForce™ or greater;
  • ATI® Rage 128, Radeon® or greater; or PowerVR Kyro II with OpenGL and DirectX 8.0 compatible driver;
  • DirectX 8.0 compatible sound card;
  • Keyboard; Mouse
