Notes App note being backed up by Time Machine.

I'm having issues with the new Notes application in Mountain Lion not being backed up by Time Machine. If it is being backed up then the new OS is keeping me from accessing the time stamps or backups. Normally I could just open up an application and enter into the time machine to find the stored local time stamps but the Notes screen minimizes and the finder window opens automatically keeping me from accessing stored backup of the new Notes app. Is anyone having this same issue?

All,

I turned it around: not backing up Notes but backing up iCloud (and/or syncing it to another cloud provider).

Have a look at this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4910?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

For me, this is the fix. I have stopped searching for alternative apps (which don't really exist) and I'm using Notes again without really worrying about having lost any data when an empty Notes shows up.

Cheers,

Koen

If you need to get back your notes, you first disconnect from internet... Then copy your notes to a safe place (desktop).. Then delete the folder at your library and then copy the safe folder back to notes at library... you can see one old file date..that is the main file you need to get back the notes.. You can delete the other 2 new dated ones as they are copy from icloud.. Now you can enjoy opening your note.app and you will see all your old notes are back

This works..remove the existing files, restore the 3 files mentioned below, then reopen Notes. However before reconnecting to the network you must update the last modified time of the restored notes to the current time so that iCloud does not overwrrite them.

If you dont have hundreds of files you can do this by simply by opening each note and and making a minor edit such as adding a space.

cheers

So the actual database that you want is a Core Data database.

You would need to restore the contents of your ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.Notes/Data/Library/Notes directory.

There are 3 files in there:

NotesV1.storedata

NotesV1.storedata-shm

NotesV1.storedata-wal

I think if you restore that directory to a point in time you should be able to recover the notes. However, because it syncs with iCloud, there is the possibiilty that they would be immediately deleted again from a server-side command.

Thanks for this!!!

I followed these instructions and it worked.

I disconnected from the internet first.

Coppied the files to my desktop.

Then just coppied and pasted them ontop of the current files, replacing them.

This restored my notes that I had lost.

Then I coppied the note that I wanted to keep.

Pasted it in as a new note.

This gave me two versions on the same note.

Then turned the internet back on, and it deleted the old vesion, keeping the new version.

Thanks again!!!

You might want to consider starting a new discussion. Since this one is a couple of years old, less people are likely to look at it. You can link to this one. In Finder hold down the option/alt key while selecting the Go menu item. Select Library. Then go to Library/Containers/com.apple.Notes/Data/Library/Notes directory. Copy them to that location.
