Airport USB printing - Canon MF 4500 series

Hello -

See my Mac specs associated with this posting.

I have plugged our printer (Canon MF4570dn) in to our Airport Extreme (flying saucer version) using a USB cable but am having trouble sending prints to it. I uninstalled and reinstalled the most recent printer drivers and have used System Preferences > Print & Fax to add the printer - that is, the printer is found by the system and I can add it with no problems. The green dot shows up below the printer name, indicating that it is recognized and connected.

When I attempt to make a print, I get an error message:

Canon UFR II Printer Driver

Cannot communicate with the printer, or the printer is not supported. If the printer is supported, check the printer connection and add it again, then start Printer Utility to get the printer information.

I've tried uninstalling and re-installing drivers to no avail. Does anyone have suggestions for how to fix problem? Am I doing something wrong?

Open Print and Fax and you should likely see that the printer will appear to be installed twice.....one at a computer location and the other at the AirPort location.

Make sure that the printer located at the AirPort Extreme is set to be the Default Printer

Try to print

If still no luck, try following Apple's Printer Troubleshooting Guide. Sometimes, the last step.....Resetting the Print System.....will work miracles when all else seems to fail. Good luck.

Sorry, no other suggestions other than to think that the 6.3 firmware version in the older AirPort may not be compatible with newer printers....even if your computer recognizes the printer.

I have run into situations in the past with older AirPort Extremes and Express devices when the printer was recognized, but it would simply not work at the USB port of the AirPorts....while it would work when installed and connected to the Mac computer. When I tried the same printer(s) on a newer "n" version of the AirPort Express.....it did work fine.
