When I go to settings,then to general and then to About. My name appears on the top line.

Tap your name there and change it.
I did tap it,and nothing happens. ( my name is shown above the "Network" line.)
That is how to change it directly on the iPhone.
You can also do it in iTunes.
Select the iPhone in iTunes.
Double click on the iPhone name.
