Q: iPAD 3 & dropping WiFi connections ( on 2 new iPADs)

So I bought a new iPAD 3 about 4 weeks back and everytime I stream or watch a video or browse the connection would drop. Netflix would complain of no internet connection. I then immediately try to go a news website on Safari and it also complains of internet connectivity. I have tried all options available including reseting / forgeting my wifi connection at home. Note that my MBP, desktop, iPOD, iPHONE, Windows laptop all have internet connectivity at same time but not my iPAD. So this issues doesn't seem to be a router issue. I went to Glendale CA store and they issued me a new iPAD. Guess what..I have been using it for past 2 days and the same wifi issues exist on it too. Now I am frustrated ...anyone in same boat and what would you recommend?

    Here's a good article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398

I would especially recommend making sure your router(s) have the latest firmware.  If you're using Apple routers, the AirPort utility can help.

I do not have a Apple router. All my other connected devices work great except my iPAD which disconnects from wifi every 10 minutes.

It might still be a good idea to check your router's firmware to make sure it's the most current.

Another thing you might try is hang out at that Glendale store for a while with your iPad.  Sign on to the Apple wifi there (they let all customers do that), and see if you can stay on for more than 10 minutes.

I do not believe router firmware has anything to do with the iPAD connectivity. I have so many connected devices at home , I have never had any issues with them wether its a windows pc, laptop , MBP , iPOD, iPHONE or android devices. If a firmware on a $40 router can break a iPAD (worth $500 plus) wifi connectivity then we have something seriously wrong with the iPAD hardware .

    Use Static IP

Copy your iPhone DHCP settings (IP Address, Subnet Mask, Router, DNS) and enter it into your iPad Static page. Turn off your iPhone before you activate the settings on your iPad. Otherwise there will be a IP conflict.

Thanks. I will try that. So if thats the case how can I avoid this when I have the iPHONE and the iPAD at home and both connected to my router ?

When you turn on the iPhone later, the router will automatically asign a new IP to your iPhone.

No solution has helped me so far. The 2nd iPAD has same issues as the first one. So frustrating.. I am going to return to the Apple store today to discuss this. Everything else at my home works fine and that includes windows desktop, ipod touch , iphone, a google tablet, a windows laptop and a HTC EVO phone. This has something to do with the iPAD itself (software or hardware I am not sure) and Apple has to admit it.

Have you tried connecting with WEP/WPA disable?

Take a look at this article http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4199 it might help.

The above article is for any type of router, and not just apple's Airports.

I hope this helps you out with your dilemma.

If issue still persist by all means make another visit to the Glendale, CA Apple store.

Let me know how this turns out for you.

I am not going to even try that. I fail to understand why these router settings have to be even changed for testing for a WIFI connection. A $500 plus electronic gadget should be able to connect to any wifi. Especially when other Apple products I have connect to same router seamlessly.

I came back with one of the worst visits to the Genius bar today. I don't even know why these guys are called geniuses. So I walk and wait a pathetic 50 minutes past my appointment time and the genius shows up. I explain the problem to him and he takes it inside the dark room for 10 minutes. Comes back and says he is not able to recreate the problem. He said the wifi in Apple store is build for Apple devices and thats why its possible the iPAD is showing no connectivity issues. *** !! The wifi is build for Apple devices? what does that even mean? I have been in IT / software development for 20 years and I know what WIFI is. He said he cannot do anything and asked me to call the 800 number for help. I come home and guess what...iPAD loses connectivity in 20 minutes and I am back to square one. All the other devices work fine.. and no my QOS is not active on my router...Its a Trendnet router which I have been using for past 2 years without any issues with the latest software....Pathetic..I will be asking for a refund if they cant fix it.

I do agree, if other devices (i.e Desktop, MBP, iPod and iPhone) are connecting to your router with no issue, then it's the device.

It appears something is wrong with the iPad and you should take it back for a refund or exchange.

I hope this all works out for you.

I finally figured it out! I had this problem for over a year and tried everything I found in here and some new solutions that I made up (restarted the device, the router, the modem; optimized the router's setting, updated the firmware, turned off Bluetooth). Here's what it was, though: go to Settings>>General>>Auto-lock, then click on "Never."

The problem is that some Apple devices try to save battery power by dropping the wifi connection after a set period of time, and if you're doing something relatively passive, like streaming Netflix for example, the device will assume that it isn't being used and stop actively connecting to wifi. The device keeps the screen active and lit, however, thus the confusion.
