i need to reformat my hard drive so i can eliminate the partition (LION) will not let me unmount the drive

My hard drive was partitioned before i installed lion, and now i need to remove the partition but lion wont let me unmount to do so, please help

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.4)

You will need to boot from a source that does NOT reside on the volume that you wish to un-mount.
