How to connect or activate mini dvihdmi port on Mac pro 10.6x ?

Why when I plug mini dvihdmicable adapter into the mini dvi port and then into my HDTV nothing happens? What am I not doing?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)
