Q: AFP stopped working!

Running an old macbook pro 10.5.8

I've been connecting to my work server (locally) via afp for 6 months... now it stopped working! took it on a business trip, used their internet, but did not change a thing! (still connecting DHCP). Using the same wire to connect (not wifi), my internet works, I can connect to the filemaker server... I've restarted and shut down several times.

The "connect to server" window pops up, I can enter in the appropriate IP and then it just hangs on "connecting to server"

After fifteen minutes I "cancel" and about 5 mins after that I get the login screen (I then log in and nothing happens).

It's not just this server! I can "see" other work computers and the exact same thing happens when connecting to those shared computers, so I know it's this macbook.

No software updates pending. Fixed permissions on the drive. No other drives connected.

Thank you in advance for the suggestions!!!!!

To find out if it's system wide or user specific, try this...

Open System Preferences>Accounts, unlock the lock, click on the little plus icon, make a new admin account, log out & into the new account.

Does it work in the new account?

user specific! The second user connects with NO probs.

What the heck does this mean?!

Hi,  in the old account, this has worked for a few...

Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712

    10.7…

System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.

    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...

System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.

The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.

Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.

For 10.5/10.6, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...

    208.67.222.222

    208.67.220.220

    Click OK.

    Also, turn off IPv6:

    System Preferences » Network » AirPort » TCP/IP tab » Configure IPv6

    Or whatever Interface you use.

we're all hardwired (no wifi), but setting up a new location didn't work (even with different dns).

My "test" account uses the same exact internal ip and can connect, so I feel like this is afp settings/preferences specific.

I've been slogging though the boards, but apple support doesn't have much on rebuilding/reinstalling afp.

    is the solution

another user in my office couldn't connect, using a different laptop, different os version, etc. but the rest of the macs here could... the answer? moble me.

signed out of MM and it connected no problems. Lion server did not like MM. So, it wasn't the user, but the server and MM.

TY BDAqua for sticking with me!

    have a great day!

Just want to bump this, as we've been troubleshooting this issue across 6 computers for days.

We were experiencing delays on the "Connecting to" prompt (before user auth) for both AFP and SMB. Would take about 4 minutes to show the credentials prompt. We're running machines & Xserves on 10.6.8. Other user accounts would connect fine, it was just the active user accounts that showed the delay.

We tried everything. Signing out of MobileMe was the only solution to our issue. That's one **** of a bug right there. Thank you for the solution!!!

I thought Mobile Me was replaced by iCloud in Mountain Lion. I'm having the same issue and the only thing that I've been able to do is create a new user name which works when I try to access my Shared Drive. My issue started when I upgraded all-the-way from Leopard to Mountain Lion. I have a Western Digital hard drive that is connected to my network... previously, I would go to finder, click on the drive and connect instantly. Since upgrading, I haven't been able to connect again. Any help is greatly appreciated.
