adobe error (14)

I am having problems with downloaded pdf files. When downloading from one source I consistently get a error message reading as follows: "There was an error opening this document. There was a problem reading this document (14)." This happens with all pdf's downloaded from this site.

Can anyone give me clues about what is happening? Is this a problem with Adobe? The source cite? I've recently upgraded to Mountain Lion and have Adobe Reader 10.1.3. Is this somehow related to those upgrades? Something else?

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.4.11)

If it were me I would uninstall adobe reader and use Preview instead.

I tried opening one pdf from the site and got the message as follows: "There was an error opening this document. There was a problem reading this document (14). It may be damaged or use a file format that Preview doesn’t recognize."

It sounds like a problem with the PDFs on that site then.

It doesn't happen with PDFs from elsewhere?

If they're on a public URL and you could provide it, I could try, as I have no problems in general with PDFs. But this is unlikely to be a Mountain Lion specific problem.

No problems with other PDF's. The site is for a publisher of a professional journal. You can only login and access the volumns free if you belong to the organization.

I'm thinking it's the site and they don't want to own up to it
