Windows Intranet and Mac

I'm in a large organisation with a windows server running an intranet.

To access the site on a company windows box you type http://intranet and it will connect and load fine.

If I access it through my mac, I have to enter in the total server name; i.e. http://intranet.servername.com.au it will then load fine.

The drama is that if I click a link, the links are default to the domain only; i.e. http://intranet/subfolder/index.html this obviously doesn't work unless I manually enter in the server name every time.

Is there a way I can program safari to automatically associate http://intranet as http://intranet.servename.com.au?

MacBook Air (13-inch, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Does the name "intranet" resolve to the server in DNS? Is the Mac configured to access the internal name server?

The server name is actually called "intranet" as the host name which say the ip is 192.168.0.1 for instance.

I don't think it's setup to access the name server. I cannot join the network server as it requires admin login rights which they don't support apple products so I'm using my mac without the IT dept knowing.

I don't know anything about Windows networking, and I don't want to know. If for some reason you can't access the name server, or if the network uses some Microsoft perversion of DNS instead of real DNS, then you'll have to add the following line to your hosts file:

192.168.0.1 intranet

Don't forget that it's there.

Thanks, your help allowed me to search the right thing in Google, and I found the below link as a resource on how to use the 'sudo' command in Terminal to amend the host file.
