Portal 2 crashes since upgrade to ML

I realise this isn't a gaming forum but I wonder if anyone can help.

Since upgrading to ML (via a clean install) and installing Portal 2 via Steam, the game crashes when loading levels. The game's main menu loads OK but crashes upon loading levels. 😢 Crash report: http://pastebin.com/Bw0t2Bt2

I am not in BETA testing (can’t find any option to opt in or out) and I’ve also 'verified local game cache’ as suggested on the Steam forums. I've reported the problem to Valve via their online feedback system but I've not heard anything back from them yet.

Other than using Boot Camp to install Portal 2 on Windows 7, any ideas on getting Portal 2 to work on OS X Mountain Lion?

I'm running a MacBook Pro 2.2 i7 Quad, 8GB RAM, 1GB AMD GPU.

I'm also finding fullscreen video in ML often flickers green/yellow (e.g. I can't watch the Olympics online fullscreen 😢) and there are various other graphical glitches (especially in Mail). So I wonder if there's an underlying AMD driver problem?

I have the same problem on Macbook Air (2012), ML upgraded from Lion.

Same here! Although I don't think it's a ML issue since I installed Portal 2 three days ago, I already had ML and it worked fine for three days. This is weird! Nothing changed on my computer as far as I remember. I left the game yesterday, came back a few hours later and since then it's not working anymore.

Like you main menu loads okay but I cannot load a level. I uninstalled and reinstalled Steam: did not help. I uninstalled and reinstalled Portal 2: did not help.

I will keep trying and let you know if I figure it out...

Same problem here 😟

First time trying steam and buying a game then cant play. Murphys law! The menu loads but it crashes while loading the first level.

If anyone finds a fix please post back.

Last night I installed Portal 2 on Boot Camp. The game loaded fine, I played for a couple of minutes then saved my progress. Back in Mountain Lion I started the game and loaded the new saved game slot. The level loaded fine! 😁

Coincidence? Maybe Valve fixed a the problem last night. Maybe it'll crash at the next save (I only played for few minutes just to test it)? Very strange.

THEY NEED TO UPDATE MOUNTAIN LION OS CAUSE PORTAL 2 WORKS ON LION AND SNOW LEOPARD SO WHY THE HECK NOT ON MOUNTAIN LION!! THEY ARE NO UPDATING IT IVE CHECKED FOR UPDATES A MILLION TIMES! im just frustrated i finally buy a game and i cant work on this os thats "appearantly" so good. there needs to be a fix for this!

Correction to your post: "Valve" needs to release a software Update so that Portal 2 will be compatible with Mountain Lion. It is Not the other way around.

I haven't had a problem with Portal 2 (or Portal) in ML on my Mid 2012 MBA. Then again, I'm running all the Steam files off of an external USB3.0 HDD where the Steam and game files were installed under Lion.

I wonder if it's an install issue with ML?

Update to my last "it's working again" post - it's not! Worked last night, now back to crashing again. ***! 😢

On the Steam forums there are LOTS of complains. Seems there was an update a day or too ago that's causing all sorts of problems. Effecting some Lion users too.

Me too! Same problem, only I just purchased Portal 2 new - and I can't even play it at all! What's going on here? Menu loads fine, but just before a level loads it crashes. Would this be a ML issue or a Valve/Portal 2 issue?

Update: I heard from Steam support today. They have some issues with Mac and are working on it. They will release a Steam update when it's fixed (BTW: Civilization V and other games stopped working as well, not just Portal).
