What happens when you try to turn it off? Are you holding down the Pause/Play button and once the display turns off switch Hold on? You might want to try resetting it ( Knowledge Base Document #61705 on How to Reset iPod).

My nano wouldt turn off so I did the reset and now it is working again. Try the reset first. It really worked...
