No new mail alert sound in Mountain Lion

I did a clean install of ML, In Lion when I had an alert sound when new mail arrived, i cannot get it to work in ML.

It is enables in mail, and also in sound preferences as well, but still no sound when new mail arrives.

Anyone else?

I have exactly the same issue and rebooting temporarily restarts the sounds as normal.

I found and quit the coreaudiod file. It apparently fixed the sound issue.

I am a serious amateur with dangerous flyin' fingers so I should stop tinkering and ask if the coreaudiod file needs some kind of restarting or will simply closing the Activity monitor window be all that is needed?

A one-time force sleep foloowed by re-waking didn't make the sound problem reappear. I guess that's progress.

Thanks for the suggestions. (I wish I knew what the heck I was doing.)

None of these fixes have ever worked for me consistently. They have all been temporary fixes. After a year and a half I have finally found a pemanent fix. I think it is related to which mail server or carrier you use. Recently when maverick came out I had all kinds of problems composing new email with the mail program and my GMAIL account. Apple said it was a problem with gmail and not there mail program. So I changed my mail server to icloud.com. I went to gmail web site and forwarded all my mail from gmail to icloud.com. It's been 2-3 months now and I have never lost my alert sounds again. I could never go more than a couple of days before without the problem. It happened on multiple mac devices. I was surprised the issue was never corrected by apple. I had spoken to them countless times and they reassured me it was being looked at by the engineers. I am now convinced that the problem is related to how different mail servers react to the mail program. i would never have thought about it if I didn't have the problems composing new mail with GMAIL after maverick came out with their new mail app. I never realized that different mail servers could interact with the osx app differently. I hope this helps all of you who have suffered with this glitch since 10.8 came out 1.5 yrs ago. Good luck.

"...the bad is that people like me who use several accounts can not exclude them.

I consider a defect App Mail "\

Clearly it is the final responsibility of Apple. Can you imagine the personal cost of devoting owner-work time to attempt to solve the issue? Who pays for my hours of trying to fix it?

You are correct. If the product stops working after four years, the responsibility for a solution belongs to the product creator, not the user.

I resolved it by going into mail preferences, general tab & changing the sounds to "none" and unchecking "play sounds for other mail actions".

Then I quit mail from the top menu bar. I restarted mail, went back into preferences did the opposite: changed sounds to "new messages sound" and checked "play sounds for other mail actions", I then quit mail again from the top menu and then reopened it. Magically, my whoosh was back.

Sometimes it's easier than you think 🙂
