Since installing Mountain Lion (10.8), I am unable to attach files in Mac Mail by clicking on the attach paperclip icon or by selecting File - "Attach to email" or File - Share - "as email"; when in the document. If I drag and drop the file into the e-mail, it works. Anyone have a fix?

I just started having this same problem this morning after upgrading, however, I was able to find a temporary solution.
- Open up a new message.
- Click the "clip" as you would attaching a file.
(Of course, you won't see the file being attached as this is the problem in the first place)
- Command-Q to force quit Mail
- Re-open the Mail
- You should be able to see the file you attached to the New Email you have created.
Although this does not provide a permanent fix to this issue, at least you can continue and finish whatever you are doing for now.

Repair your permissions by going to disk utility in the "other" folder in applications. Select "disk utility" and then on the left hand side select mac HD then click repair permissions. After its done, restart your computer and try again.
Next step is to test in a different user account on your computer, if it does the same thing in a new user then it is a system wide issue, but if it works in a new user then we new it is a certain OS file on your specific user.

That's not the issue. The idea is to determine if the problem is a system problem or just something in your account's preference files. If another account works fine, then you can probably just delete some preference file and get back to business.
It acts like it will work, allows me to select a file, but then when it goes back to the email, the file isn't there. Just out of curiosity, I went through the process and sent the e-mail, but the file was not attached.
Deleting your mail.plist file will probably fix the issue. However, this means all of your mail will be deleted. Depending on what kind of email account it is you may be able to get it back though. Is it an IMAP or POP? if you don't know go to mail preferences, then accounts then select the account and look in the information center. It will say account type.

You can also drag a file to the mail icon in the dock to send it as an attachment. Mail doesn't even need to be open.
You need to test in a new user, this will determine the next troubleshooting steps. If you must, create a test user then delete it when done.
