Can't tell your location but if you are in Europe, go to Crucial.com, feed your details into their system and the site tool will tell you the maximum RAM you can install. Probability is that of you are in North America, OWC will be able to do the same thing,
Your iMac can take 3 GBs of RAm.
It's better for your iMac two install 2 matching specs of RAM, so I advise installing (2) 2 GB sticks of RAM for a total of 4 GBs. Your iMac will only address 3 out of the 4 GBs of RAM, though.
Psr the above advice, Crucial.com or OWC will give you the correct RAM for your iMac model.

it is not a matter of the memory slots supporting 2Gb but more of core duo (unlike core2duo) being a 32bit processor. it cannot address memory beyond 4gb and will not be able to address over 3gb (even if you manage to get it working with 2x2gb memory modules)
for more information check intel's web site for core duo (yonah is the code name for the cpu). its not a short coming of the laptop but the platform that was chosen.
