Q: installation problem: importing and burning CDs

On start up iTunes says, "iTunes was not properly installed. If you wish to import or burn CDs you need to reinstall iTunes." I've done this twice, even uninstalling evrything first and i still get this message. What can i do?

There's a few different things that might cause that one.

Could you post your diagnostics for us please?

In iTunes, go "Help > Run Diagnostics". Uncheck the boxes other than DVD/CD tests, as per the following screenshot:

    dvdcd diagnostics.png

    ... and click "Next".

When you get through to the final screen:

... click the "Copy to Clipboard" button and paste the diagnostics into a reply here.

    Update: registry problem.

Discovered that my computer wasn't recognizing the cd/dvd drive at all; it didn't show up in explorer under my computer. Went to control panel and found that the driver appeared to be up to date, so that wasn't the problem, although I was getting an Error Code 39 in the device manager. Found this article on fixing the registry:

    http://pcsupport.about.com/od/findbyerrormessage/a/code-39-error.htm

I also restored my system to the time prior to updating itunes.

After following the steps to fix the registry the cd/dvd drive was available again. I installed itunes once again. Then it gave me the same error as before--that it could not import/burn cds!!! BUT--when I opened itunes, it DID recognize the cd. Strange. We'll see what happens from here...

    CD Driver Not Available

That looks to be our issue.

With that one, I'd start with solution 3 from the following document:

iTunes for Windows: Optical drive is no longer recognized, or "Disc burner or software not found" alert after install
