Daisy-chained 27" Cinema display blinks when connected via Thunderbolt HD to MBA

I have a 27" Apple Cinema display with a Mini-DisplayPort plug that I am connecting as the last in the chain to a Thunderbolt external HD, which is then plugged into my mid-2012 MBA. The screen blinks on and off, about once per second, when it is connected in this manner. When I bypass the HD and plug the mini-displayport directly into the Thunderbolt port on the MBA, I do not have this problem. Yesterday, Apple support had me reset the SMC, unplug all non-Apple peripherals from the computer, and restart the MBA; this appeared to solve the problem. However, today the MBA is doing the same thing again, and resetting the SMC is not solving the problem.

First - screwed up, this was a 24" LED cinema display. I found a firmware update that I ran on the display here:

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4045

Ran it, and it appears to have worked. The LED Cinema display is plugged into my Seagate external HD via Mini DisplayPort connection, then to the 11" MBA (mid-2012) via Thunderbolt cable from the second port on the HD. Copied my entire iTunes library to the HD via Thunderbolt (22 GB) in under three minutes, all whilst moving windows and cursors around the Cinema display screen without any apparent lag in performance in display or read/write.

Hope this helps others....
