Unable to record to GB from "line in" on new retina display MB Pro

I am running GB 6.0.5 with a new retina display macbook pro running OS X 10.8 and can't get the line in to show up in Audio System settings or GB audio/midi tab. Because of this I cannot input sound from my Peavey sound board like I can on my 2 yr old MacBook Pro running exactly the same software (ie: GB 6.0.5 and OS X 10.8). The obvious difference between the two computers is that there is only one port for input and output on the new MBPro. Can anyone help with this? APL care people seemed to be in the dark when I called today. Thanks for any help.

looking at the Apple Store page for the MBP Retina, there is no line-IN, only a headphone jack. you'll need an audio interface:

(Let the page FULLY load. The link to your answer is at the top of your screen)

My understanding from the advance on MBPRD was that that port was supposed to function as an in- and output jack. If what you are telling me is true I wasted $3500 because the only reason I bought the new machine was to get more power and speed. Now when I edit and even at times when I record I get the "disk too slow" error message and it stops in the middle of the recording. Even doubling the RAM on the 2 year old machine didn't prevent this--so I thought the flash drive would be faster (I noticed when I edit I don't have that problem on my MB Air). I really don't want to have to purchase another device--I don't record music, I record voices as podcasts so audio quality isn't crucial. I am very disappointed if this is the case on the retina display machine.

If you only need to record speech, a Griffin iMic Audio adapter should suffice, to turn one of your USB ports into Line-in Recording with iMic in GarageBand

The annoying "disk to slow" can happen for several reasons:

  1. One of your other applications may be having a memory leak and hogging all the RAM - you can see the memory usage in the Activity Viewer. If a memory leak should be the problem, reboot the system before lauching garageBand.
  2. Your system drive may be nearly full - keep 10% of the disk empty, and 20% would be much better. A full disk will degrade the system.
  3. You may be overtaxing GarageBand - have you seen this list of Performance Tips:

P.S: To see the audio capabilities of your Retina MBP, click the Apple Menu  in the upper left corner of the main menu bar, select "About this Mac". Click the "More Info" button in the "About" panel.

This will open the "System Information" panel. Disclose the Hardware section in the left column and select "Audio". This will show you the Audio input and output devices and connections.

I actually found the solution to this problem after visiting the Apple store. They kept my machine overnight to get to the bottom of it.Tthe audio input/output needs 3 bands on it rather than the two on older ones (for three channels I believe). The Apple headphones would work but not older ones. I bought an iRig guitar adapter and plug the output from the sound board into the place for the guitar input and plug the other end into the audio input/output jack on my MBP Retina. (I actually figured out that part on my own). To my delight it works great and was only $40!!
