Account temporarily unavailable... trouble downloading apps or music?

Anyone having this issue or am I doing something wrong? Just got a new iPhone and cannot download any apps or music because a message keeps popping up saying "Your account is temporarily unavailable. Try again later." Any help is appreciated.

iPhone 4S, iOS 5.1.1

So far for me it seems to be only affecting iTunes and only affecting updates or purhcases - does not affect iPod or iPhone or my ability to log in and see my account details - just to get updates.

I am having the same issue on a 10.6.8 and a 10.8.0 system - so Mountain Lion is not to blame.

At first I thought my iTunes was damaged by a ssytem reboot that happened about an hour before I woke up (MS database something or other caused it). but with the same error on another sytem that seems to be ruled out.

On my wife's netbook - launching iTunes gave me an error related to Music Match - that asked me to log out and in again. But then the same account unavailable message - sonot unique to Mac verson of iTunes.

So the only common factor left on my end is my internet connection - however, my iPhone and iPad are using that same connection - so seems unlikely a problem on my end - especially if other folks are seeing the same thing.

I just started having this issue today as well - fine on my iPhone and iPad - but not working on either of two compouters today. Tried to de-authorize and re-authorize - but cannot deauthorize since account info cannot be found.

But when I go to Store - View My Account - my account details show up - only when making a purchase or update does it say unable. very odd

I am back in business.

I think the suggestion that it might be related to the accounting hacking report was along the lines of they temporarily stopped access to purchases while they combed through their systems looking for patterns and then reactivated access as they passed the test.

However, given that it was only affecting iTunes and not iOS devices I suspect it is more likely something to do with the authentication access for each type of device being handled by differnent systems/servers/applications.

I have run into this with another OEM who has been working towards a single sign on for years - and while they have made greate strides - they still have multiple different systems supporting various functions - the result of which is that there ae times when access to one portion of their services is unavailable while all others are unaffected.
