New Mail Notification Discrepancy

Every so often I get a notification saying I have x amount of new Mail, but when I check my mail I see there is only 1 new mail and not the amount the Notification stated.

I do have older Unread Mail, which was received several days prior. Could this be causing the OS to get confused?

I'm on OS 5.0.1.
