Can I rebuild a Raid using an external disc as replacement for internal?

I have 2x 2tb discs installed as an internal mirror raid disc.

One of the discs has failed

I'd like to replace it using an external disc but im unsure how to go about this

Can I drop out the internal int he set and use the external to rebuild?

If so how?
