Annoying imap.gmail.com is not responding.

I have been unable to resolve this after trying many suggestions on the web. This is a Verizon IPhone 4S. Daily I get this message and it's usually when I change from 3G data to wireless or the opposite. I have no problems with data other than GMAIL. The message I get is "The mail server imap.gmail.com is not responding. Verify that you have entered the correct account info in the mail Settings". See SnapShot Attached.

I am running IOS 5.1.1

The only way I can resolve the problem is to reboot the phone and it starts working again.

These are all the things I have tried to resolve it.

  • Deleted and recreated gmail account several times (works temporaily then problem returns)
  • Tried changing IMAP server from imap.gmail.com to imap.googlemail.com (works then problem returns again)
  • Tried the Google Unlock CAPTCHA suggestion
  • I am using IMAP vs Exchange account setup on the Iphone becuase I need to send email as another identity. When I switch to Active Synch it is much faster, works better, but I see no way to send as another email account using that setup. I have my personal email account forwarded to GMAIL. I also have my personal email as my primary ID in gmail. Regardless, the Iphone sends as the gmail.com account instead of my personal alias.

Please let me know if anyone has any suggestions.

After spending 4 hours today trying everything to fix this problem, I finally fixed it. I went to other (not gmail button) and entered my email account as a POP instead of IMAP. This came up with all of my emails, starting with the oldest. I really just wanted to see if I could send an email with that and I could! Once I sent the email, I deleted that account and tried to set up the same gmail account but with IMAP instead (again, not using the gmail button). IT WORKED! Once I did that I tried what would happen if I used the gmail button (since it shows me sent mail, etc.) and that worked too!!! I could not be more excited right now. The link below will show you what you need to enter when you go through the other email button. GOOD LUCK!

Since just over a month I have the same issue with one of my Gmail accounts (primary) on my iPhone 4S. My other Gmail accounts work fine. I am hesitant to delete and re-create the account as my notes and calendars are linked. I really can't afford to loose any of these. I will shortly upgrade to iPhone 5S or 6. Might this solve the problem? Any advice?

I tried everything suggested in this forum and no matter what I did I couldn't get it to work. Eventually I figured out if you just had an exchange email account rather than a Gmail account it will work. Email address is just your email address, server is M.google.com username is your email address password is your password. Leave Domain blank. I hope this helps and good luck!

I had this problem too and it wasn't that my 2-step verification process was enabled in my Google account, it was that my "Access for Less Secure Apps" google account security setting was Disabled. Once I Enabled it, my mail app worked fine. I was only having the problem on an old ipod (not on my newer iphone) so it makes sense because the mail application on the old ipod is a "less secure app" so Google was denying it's connection to my Google account.

Simply log into your Google account, click your profile photo at the top-right, click on the Account link, select the Security tab/link and scroll down to the Account Permissions section. Then ENABLE "Access for less secure apps"

@ERIKACANE,

Yes, what I mentioned in my post did solve my problem. Here is what I did...

1. Logged into my Google account

2. Clicked my profile photo at the top-right

3. Clicked on the Account link

4. Selected the Security tab/link (here's the link to your Google Security Settings ( www.google.com/settings/security )

5. Scrolled down to the ACCOUNT PERMISSIONS section

6. Clicked on the SETTINGS for the "Access for less secure apps"

7. Clicked on the ENABLE radio button to enable access for less secure apps.

NOTE: be sure to read the information on the settings screen and in the Learn More link before clicking ENABLE, to make sure that's what you really want to do.
