Annoying imap.gmail.com is not responding.

I have been unable to resolve this after trying many suggestions on the web. This is a Verizon IPhone 4S. Daily I get this message and it's usually when I change from 3G data to wireless or the opposite. I have no problems with data other than GMAIL. The message I get is "The mail server imap.gmail.com is not responding. Verify that you have entered the correct account info in the mail Settings". See SnapShot Attached.

I am running IOS 5.1.1

The only way I can resolve the problem is to reboot the phone and it starts working again.

These are all the things I have tried to resolve it.

  • Deleted and recreated gmail account several times (works temporaily then problem returns)
  • Tried changing IMAP server from imap.gmail.com to imap.googlemail.com (works then problem returns again)
  • Tried the Google Unlock CAPTCHA suggestion
  • I am using IMAP vs Exchange account setup on the Iphone becuase I need to send email as another identity. When I switch to Active Synch it is much faster, works better, but I see no way to send as another email account using that setup. I have my personal email account forwarded to GMAIL. I also have my personal email as my primary ID in gmail. Regardless, the Iphone sends as the gmail.com account instead of my personal alias.

Please let me know if anyone has any suggestions.

YMMV, but try changing "imap.gmail.com" to "imap.googlemail.com". I was having the same issue and this worked for me. I'm not sure if the problem is in my mac, or google' s imap server but I was able to receive email after changing the server setting. I have upgraded this mac from snow leopard to lion, then to mountain lion over the past 2 years. I dont know if mac's are like pc's in that respect, but several other programs have behaved strangely along the way. I will probably do a clean install and start from scratch.

Been watching these threads closely and wanted to share my experience. The 'reboot after delete' trick worked for me initially after this problem resurfaced with iOS 6. However, after about a week, the problem has returned and I'm getting the same original imap error message. I just had to go through the same delete-reboot-add account steps to get things working again. Has anyone else had this experience and now having to go through the same annoying process again? Fwiw, it almost seems as if the problem is aggravated by higher frequencies of email retrieval. However, that might just be a coincidence on my end.

I've had this problem on and off since mid-July. Usually restarting Mail would fix it temporarily until today when I upgraded to ios 6 and I completely loss access to my gmail even after restarting Mail and the phone multiple times. I finally found this link from Apple:

https://accounts.google.com/DisplayUnlockCaptcha

and magically it started working immediately. Could be coincidence - but it's been working ever since. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

It worked, for now. Had to restart the phone before the mail app was seen by google as trying a "new" login attempt.

Vvery annoying that this gross issue has to be resolved like these, digging through user forums. Thanks for posting!!! This Apple/Google quarrel is getting on my nerves. Go fight somewhere else!

Priscilla: thanks for your post. i thought that maybe that was one way around this issue, but was hesitant to try it. But i finally got so frustrated that it was my only option left. I am still trying to figure out if its because of the upgraded software, or that the iCloud. But in the meantime, i am telling all my friends to not download the upgrade.
