Restore desktop with back-up data

I used Carbon Copy Cloner to back-up my files from the 10.4.11 awhile before the HD crashed. I had it replaced & it should be a clean copy of the OS plus a few files they could save. What I want to do is just take everything I back-up & put it on the new HD so I have the same capabilities as before (for instance I can't run Skype right now but all the accounts should be in the back-up). Shouldn't I be able to simple connect the back-up and drag whatever I want to the desktop or is that not going to restore things? Appreciate anything for a better understanding. Thanks

No.

Presumably you made a bootable clone using CCC? Use CCC to clone ot back to the new HD, but make sure that the HD has first been formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

You're giving me too much credit to think I have any idea what I've done or am doing. I want to get the data from my backup and put it in my HD that was replaced. The tech tried to recover from the failed HD but didn't get much. Rather than waste space, I'd like to just take everything from the backup and have my old computer back. Do I have to erase everything in the HD first? I start the desktop from the external backup but then what? Is my destination the HD or a new disk image or a separate folder? Please help!

The HD has the format you identified. I created a disk image of the back-up. When I went to the Skype application, it showed no information like it was the current program, not the one I was using previously & backed up. It didn't replace what is on the HD but simply added the image of the back-up. How do I make my desktop function like before & make it use only the programs and information I backed up?

Sorry for not explaining properly. My desktop had programs that used the OS 9 system that only continued to be supported up to OS 10.4.11. When I backed up the data, I assumed the OS program was part of it but the desktop can't find it from the disk image. I made a disk image because when I when to transfer to the HD, CCC said that I need to start the desktop from the backup & advised not to put on the HD. Did I guess wrong? Should I dump the image & do it over again to the HD? Will that replace everything & make what I backed up functional again? I mentioned Skype because that was my measure. The current HD has an application with no users on it. I know the back up had alot of history so it should show again if I recover my backup properly. Right? I just want to have my desktop access the programs and data I had before. Can you please help?

I have received this comment:

I don't know, what s/he has done or is doing, but he seems to have restored his OS in way, that now the Classic environment is missing and his MacOS 9 applications no longer are supported.

The OP says the CCC copy was made from a clean install plus some files. I suspect, this clean install did not have Classic, and the OP only now does notice its absence. I'd suggest to reinstall from the latest installation media that had Classic.

Would that be an accurate description?

Jumping in, so I might be missing something.

Just a couple of things. AFAIK, CCC ignores the OS system. For that, you needed to copy the OS 9 system folder via drag & drop. Unless you booted with the CCC clone, then you''re in a world of hurt. Step one is to first install OS 9, followed by installing Tiger, using the same admin username/password combination you previously used. Then, run Software Update to get to 10.4.11. Once that's finished, then you should be able to move everything from the same use account to the new HD. As for the other user accounts, you'll have to recreate them and repeat.

Thank you for all the information. I need more help from the calvary! I transfered the OS 9 system to my new imac(at the time) from a previous desktop so I don't think i have the system disks. I'm not sure of the significance of booting. What does that mean? I took a look at the link Klaus1 sent and thought I should try "Restoring individual items or an entire disk image to another hard drive using CCC". Will that make the programs work or will I still be missing OS 9? Can I download OS 9 from the internet?

W/o the system OS discs, then you're out of luck. OS 9 isn't available for DL, only the updates. You need those discs to insole OS 9. Once installed, then in Tiger, Classic mode should run any OS 9 apps. Otherwise, I'd just be guessing.

Sorry, I am simply too confused.

This comment may be relevant:

CCC simply makes an exact copy and you can clone everything right back - I'm doing that all the time. But I doubt that she/he cloned a full, working system. It is too long ago that I worked with 10.4; so I have no idea how to check, if the clone is in working condition. I'd check the clone first, by booting from the clone, see if the classic applications are working, when booting from the clone, and only if all is fine, clone the clone.

But if classic should be missing on the clone, he/she needs to reinstall from the installation media.
