I created a new second level list style. But when I try to apply it to different lines in the document, the list style settings get jumbled. Is there a way list styles can be applied just like regular text styles?

Are you asking about AppleWorks, the focus of this forum? Styles in AppleWorks are poorly implemented & will never be fixed.
