Q: Tape plays fine in camera, but stutters when logging

Hey everyone,

I'm working on a project where we are bringing in a lot of archival materials shot on miniDV. The tape plays back in the camera, but when I attempt to actually "capture now", the camera rapidly blinks between "pause" and "play" and stops advancing.

I have a lot of background working in miniDV, but I've never encountered this.

    Hi

    My first thoughts are

    • Project set-up are not matching the miniDV tape quality e.g. frames per sec PAL (25fps) and NTSC (29.97fps)

must be the same on tape as project set-up in Easy-Set-up.

I think You can click in TimeLine and keep down or click [cmd+0] to see TimeLine set-up properties.

( PLEASE Correct me if wrong ! )

    • If material is recorded in LP-Mode on Camera ! - THEN You MUST use same Camera as recorded the tape - not even an equivalent one will do (same Brand and same type - still NOT OK) the tolerances are to small to be able to work on a twin-Camera.

I Never use LP-Mode as when Camera dies - so does all the tapes (in LP-Mode).

    Yours Bengt W

Further to what Bengt said, check your camera's make and model against the easy setups in this chart.

If you're playing from a camera that can shoot both DV and HDV, verify the camera is set to the right mode.

    Good luck.

If you have a tv connected directly to the deck/camera you can usually choose to display the format of the material recorded on the tape often by enabling "display"  So check to make sure it matches your easy setup.  Also, if I remember correctly dvcpro will play back on many decks/cameras but will not output via firewire.  This could be the problem.  If this is the case, you'll have to connect the video out from the camera/deck to your computer via a capture card or device of some sort.
