iPod touch 2.2.1 version upgrade?

I have an iPod touch 16 GB version 2.2.1 that a friend recently gave me. Most of the apps seem to work only on the more recent versions. Is there any way to update the firmware to more recent version?

You very likely have a 1G iPod. Those can only go to 3.1.3 that you get here:

Identifying iPod models

There are only some apps that will works with iOS 3.1.3 and a 1G iPod.
