Diagnostics say no iPod found...Why?

iPod Touch version 4.2.1 will not come up on iTunes. Diagnostics under Ports states 'no iPod, iPhone or iPad found'. I have rebooted and reset the Touch. I have used different cords and different computers with the same nonresults. It charges fine on an AC charger. Both computers and iTunes have no problem seeing my iPad or another Touch. Anybody have any ideas that would make it a non-horrible, non-expensive problem? Thanks.

- Try a reset. Nothing is lost

Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at

least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

- Look at the dock connector. Look for abnormalities like bent or corroded contacts, foreign material and cracked or broken plastic.

- You can try placing the iPod in Recovery Mode and then try restoring it. However, if not successful you may not have a working iPod unless this program can get the iPod out of recovery mode.

- Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.
