LOTS of spinning wheels in Mountain Lion--multiple applications, ALL the time

I've recently updated my brand new mid-2012 MacBook Pro (1TB hard drive, 8 GB RAM) to Mountain Lion. It slows down ALL of the time. Many applications will end up with the spinning wheel. Sometimes it will start with one application and begin rolling into other open applications. Rarely do they actually show up in Activity Monitor as hangs, just the spinning wheel. Safari pages will frequently quit loading and I'm forced to reload them to get them working again. When I bought the Mac, I did a clean install of all applications and data--I DID NOT use Migration Assistant as I wanted to weed out old system files and application cruft. When ML came out, I did a regular update to that since the "clean" install on Lion was only a few weeks old with the new laptop. I was NOT seeing these issues with Lion.

I opened up Console Log and am seeing lots of repeating errors. Below is a small sampling of what my Console log looks like lately. This is in Console>System Log Queries>All Messages.

Any ideas of what could be causing the issues other than ML bugs?

Console logs usually aren't very helpful. It is better to have some overall system information listing installed 3rd party software.

I wrote a little diagnostic program to help show what might be causing these problems. Download EtreCheck from http://www.etresoft.com/download/EtreCheck.zip, run it, and paste the results here.

Disclaimer: Although EtreCheck is free, there are other links on my site that could give me some form of compensation, financial or otherwise.

A flaky kernel extension can cause all kinds of problems from beach balls to kernel panics. Anyone experiencing any problems should not have any third party kernel extensions loaded. The com.makemkv.kext.daspi seems to be something for ripping Blu-Ray disks and is highly suspect. I think com.Cycling74.driver.Soundflower shows up in at leat 90% of all kernel panic reports I have seen here on the forms.

A couple of these failures are expected. You have more than that. Nothing here explains why but it does say that your machine isn't happy.

Anytime you have a failed launch daemon you could have problems. This usually indicates something that hasn't been uninstalled correctly. Often your computer will be busy trying to re-launch the failed daemon over and over again forever. Definitely remove the LiveScribe software.

LogMeIn is another one that I see frequently in problem reports. Maybe it's just coincidence, maybe not.

Apparently Printopia is something to allow an iOS device to print to an attached printer. Why does it need a LaunchAgent? Airprint activator doesn't. The failed Apple agent is probably another symptom of the actual problem.

That is a lot to launch on login. Livescript is broken anyway. Login Items can be easily removed and easily put back. Take all these out until your computer is running correctly.

DefaultFolder X? I woiuldn't touch that thing if you paid me. I'm not sure about Choosy either. Perian has been reported to cause problems. You certainly don't need Growl in Mountain Lion. As always, have you updated Flash this week?

Basically, it looks like the same old story. There is nothing wrong with upgrading in place and running all your old software. But there is no guarantee that all of that old software is compatible. If you have problems, that is the first place to look.

When you track down the actual culprit, be sure to post it here so other people will know.

I use DefaultFolder X. It doesn't cause any issues, and it's very handy. Been using it for years to replace the old Action Files extension in OS 9.

You certainly do need Growl in Mountain Lion. What software post notices to the Notification Center? Almost none. I use the Delivery Status widget to track packages on a daily basis, and that uses Growl. I also use Adium and that uses growl. So do a lot of other applications. Maybe one day we wont need growl, but right now we do. As it stands Notification Center doesn't even worked reliably. Sometimes my Calendar items are there, and sometimes they aren't. More than a few times they are there until I look at the sidebar, and then *poof* they are gone as I'm looking at them.

Mountain Lion has some issues. My install had been running flawlessly until recently. Now if I shut down, certain things wont work correctly. For example, Outlook 2011 takes a long time to start up. And the iMac often boots into single user mode. I'm not the only one having this problem. I only get spinning wait cursors when Time machine is starting up. Apple already seeded 10.8.1 to developers, so clearly they have some bugs to fix.

That's all well and good for people who aren't having problems. If someone is having problems, keeping software because they think it doesn't cause any issue or because it is useful (or was, when the machine was running correctly) is a one-way ticket to nowhere. How do you know the original poster isn't using some version of Default Folder X from 2006? The standard procedure for troubleshooting problems is uninstall, update, and replace.

All software has bugs and there is always an update in the works. You want to wait until it is perfect? Just wait until 10.9 gets released and then Mountain Lion will be the one everyone is downgrading to. The only software that doesn't have bugs is the software no one uses.

Well you certainly have a chip on your shoulder, don't you? You are also making assumptions. Default Folder was broken a few of OS releases back, and the current version works with every OS since 10.5. So it's hard to imagine he has anything older than that, because it likely wouldn't even work.

I installed Mountain Lion the day it was released. Likewise, I have used every version of Mac OS since System 7.1.2 which was on my Performa 6115CD. I generally install them the day they are leased. I skipped the OS X Public Beta however. So I know it's never perfect.

I also know you need to see if important apps get broken. I would not have upgraded if Cubase 6, Pro Tools 9 and the Adobe CS 6 suite didn't work. Oh and MS Office 2011. They all do. But Outlook 2011 has developed a problem only when the Mac has been restarted. Others have reported this also. And then there is the single user mode bug. I've seen at least one other thread on this at this forum.

So my comment is valid, these are not just incompatibles, these are system bugs. I haven't had this type of bug in recent memory. Most of the major number upgrades have been very solid.

Now I agree with you that your software needs to be compatible. Obviously I checked that out, but we don't know about the OP. But as I said, I'm having some issues, and it's not because of third party add-ons. I've gone through the steps of removing things like Default Folder X to see if that fixes the problem. I don't think a system add-on like that would cause the single user mode boot issue. 🙂

Ah! We got to personal attacks pretty quickly, eh? I am not making any assumptions. I know little about Default Folder X other than the name and how it works by changing other applications. That alone is enough to stay away.

Are you having a problem with booting into single user mode or something? If so, start your own thread to get suggestions on how to fix it. I've never heard of such a thing.

What personal attack? Did I call you a name? Did I make some accusation about something?

"That's all well and good for people who aren't having problems. If someone is having problems, keeping software because they think it doesn't cause any issue or because it is useful (or was, when the machine was running correctly) is a one-way ticket to nowhere."

You don't hear an attitude in that? I was telling you that Default Folder X 4.4.12 runs fine on 10.8. Older versions wont run in 10.8. So I don't think he has an older version. But he will have to tell us.

You said: "DefaultFolder X? I woiuldn't touch that thing if you paid me."

And now you say: "I know little about Default Folder X other than the name and how it works by changing other applications. That alone is enough to stay away."

So you have no experience with it, but it must be bad? You have your mind all made up about it.

"a one-way ticket to nowhere" Well isn't that very dramatic? Computers are made to run software. It's not all from Apple. It's been this way for a very long time. Everyone runs lots of third party stuff on their Macs.

What does all that have to do with the problem being reported in this thread?

Really? Because Mountain Lion has some bugs, and these are being reported by people who happen to know that all their software is compatible. Even with all third party stuff turned off.

What bug are you talking about?

Bugs like the OP is talking about.

Are you having a problem with booting into single user mode or something? If so, start your own thread to get suggestions on how to fix it. I've never heard of such a thing.

So you posted a reply to my message, and even quoted it, but you did not read all of it? Go back and read it again. The post right above yours that you quoted and replied to.

I said in the last paragraph, which you must not have read:

"Mountain Lion has some issues. Apple already seeded 10.8.1 to developers, so clearly they have some bugs to fix."

If you want to offer trouble shooting tips beyond making people go to your website to download your software, you must read what people are saying.

Now when I say some bugs, they are things like the Mac booting into single user mode on its own. Others have reported this. Outlook 2011 hangs for a long time starting up, but not if you don't shut the Mac down. others have reported this.

The spinning wait cursor for no good reason at all. A lot of people are reporting this. I even told people that it must be their Macs, and not 10.8, until I started getting it. It stopped for the most part when I stopped shutting down my Mac. If I just put it to sleep, everything is fine.

So it's 10.8, and not third party apps. Apple is getting 10.8.1 out pretty quicky. Let's hope it fixes things.

Wow! I didn't mean to start a feud. By the way, the OP is "she" but of course there's no way to tell that by my username.

Let me back up a little and clarify a few things from my original post. This is a mid-2012 MacBook Pro and as I stated, when I bought the Mac, I downloaded all applications fresh from their website and did NOT use Migration Assistant. So ALL of my applications are the most recent version that they have. Thus, in the case of Default Folder X (which I love and WON'T give us) is the newest version--not years old. I DID do a regular upgrade from Lion to Mountain Lion, but only because the Lion install and software installation was only a few weeks old when ML came out.

And even though Etresoft said that Console log messages aren't very helpful, I did post it because the same type of errors are repeated so often that I thought someone might have information on what could be causing those specific errors. It does look like the Etresoft software gives us additional information and I'll try to address some of those things one at a time when I have spare time to fiddle with my software.

I will check a little more into my Livescribe and try taking the Launch Daemon out of my login items.

It seems that there are a lot of System Daemons and System Launch Daemons that failed and surely 3rd party applications aren't causing the built in system ones to crash. I could be wrong.

As far as 3rd party Preference Panes, those are ones that I use frequently, so I'm not planning on taking Choosey or Printopia out unless their site specifies that they are no longer compatible. I'll double-check my Flash version.

I will fiddle with some of my programs and take some out of login items to see if I can narrow down the issue.

Any other suggestions are welcome and hopefully a 10.8.1 update will help the situation.

You're flying off the handle for something that doesn't even concern you.

I don't care. You have no idea what the original poster is running. Maybe TeamViewer or LiveScribe is incompatible with DefaultFolderX. I would do the same thing if I were troubleshooting my own system. If there is a problem and I don't know the answer, then assuming the problem is not in any particular third party software is illogical. What if I'm wrong? What if the software that I thought couldn't possibly cause the problem actually did more than I thought? If I discount that possiblity before even trying, then I'll never figure it out.

It is bad because it inserts foreign code into other processes. This is reason Apple came up with Sandboxing - to minimize any potential damage from invasive software like this.

Everyone runs lots of third party stuff on their Macs.

But not everyone has problems. The original poster is having problems. You are having problems. I'm not 🙂.

Really? Because Mountain Lion has some bugs, and these are being reported by people who happen to know that all their software is compatible.

Know? That is a strong statement. They have done an extensive review of the source code of all of their third party software to make sure it doesn't perform any operations that were wrong in 2008 but just happened to work - until now? They have run a complete testing suite of all their third party software to ensure it performs as designed? Apple has done all of that and I doubt any Apple software engineer would make that strong of a statement.

If you want to offer trouble shooting tips beyond making people go to your website to download your software, you must read what people are saying.

If this were your thread, I would do that. The only person who can contribute any definitive information is the original poster. The best that anyone else can do is offer suggestions that might help. The worst that anyone else can do is make a "me too" claim and suggest (with no proof) that it is some OS bug and advise the original poster to just wait for an update.

Now when I say some bugs, they are things like the Mac booting into single user mode on its own. Others have reported this. Outlook 2011 hangs for a long time starting up, but not if you don't shut the Mac down. others have reported this.

It will fix only the problems that Apple has identified and nothing else. Attempting to apply the update onto a system that is having different problems than those is a bad idea. That is how people "brick" their machines.

The original poster is reporting that some low-level Apple services are failing. There is no guarantee that a software update would succeed in this situation.

Hi -

Thanks for the tool. I have a similar issue with my iMac. When I have an 'orphan' or broken kernel extension is it enough to delete the .plist and restart?

I have one to do with Android internet sharing which may be causing a problem, as well as a couple of others.

I also get tons (like a couple per second) of the "com.apple.launchd[1]: (com.apple.sleepservicesd[53475]) Exited: Killed: 9" errors, and "AppleUSBOHCI[0xffffff8018cfc000]::SuspendUSBBus Processing WDH before suspending". Happy to post the Etre log here, or to start my own thread.

My console log was very quiet and my machine very stable with Lion. 😟

LOTS of spinning wheels in Mountain Lion--multiple applications, ALL the time
