imovie freezing

iMOVIE Keeps FREEZING No matter what i do (besides Playing video) and pin wheel comes on for like 4 minutes each time, just to split a clip or move anything. Any idea why? I have 9gb of free space and I cleared the imovie preferences and iphoto preferences plists already.
