How do I stop apps opening on startup?

Since installing 10.8, I get word, mail, and firefox all opening on login. I find his incredibly irritating. I have control-clicked the dock icons and in each case under "options" the "open at login" option is unchecked. Yet these apps keep on opening on login. Mail I don't mind so much but I hate clutter and I don't like unwanted apps just opening. How do I stop this?

You might open your Applications folder>System Preferences>Users & Groups>in the upper right side of the window highlight "Login Items">look in the list below it for any of those applications that are starting unwanted, and remove them if you find them by checking their box and clicking the "minus" symbol at the bottom of the column. This may solve your issue.

Hope this helps 🙂
