External monitor fuzzy font when connecting with hdmi

I recently purchased a Samsung Syncmaster b2430 high definition monitor to use as a second display when connecting to my mid 2010 MBP. When I connect the monitor using mini display port to hdmi the font is blurry on the external monitor and it is difficult to read. The overall picture is just not crisp. I have tried different things to try and smooth the font but nothing seems to be working. I went out and bought a mini display port to vga adapter and the picture that I get using this is sharp and crisp and looks much better. I would rather use hdmi because it transfers sound as well and has a higher quality picture. I was wondering if there was anyway to get around this?
