safari 6.0 crash when right clicking a link and choosing open in new tab

Hi all, just a general question. I admit i did not search the forums yet. Hopefully this little annoyance can be resolved.

When using safari on say CNN.COM i'll right click on a link and choose Open in new tab. safari randomly disappears. no crash warnings, just gone. I can open it right up and be fine sometimes all day. This has happened to me about 5x since ML was released (i wiped my laptop the day it came out)

This has happened on a couple of different website at different times of the day. only safari was running. No other apple apps have this issue.

I have a MacBook Pro from earily '08 type 4,1

i have only apple software on this machine

i do have adobe flash installed v11.3 updated today.

i do have lastpass enabled

i do have ad-block disabled

While i'm waiting for help from you guys i'll disable all addon's and try to remove adobe to see if that is the issue. Is there any other steps i can try like delete .plist file or maybe even trying a new user profile. I am a IT professional and am not afraid to get my hands dirty trying to get this resovlved.

Thanks in advance.

P.S. i'll search the forums too and if i see a similar post i'll remove this one.

I have only seen this happen on my new mini with 10.8.2.
Since I skipped 10.7, I can't say whether Lion had it or not.

I do know that it didn't happen under 10.5.x and 10.6.x ... nor earlier versions, as I'd remember that I'm pretty sure.

When Safari was vanishing consistently the other week, and I could make it crash several times in a row by repeating my last steps. Command N for new tab, enter search term in google box, search, then right click open in new tab on the image results link, which was a few line down from the top. Relaunch Safari. It remembers all but the last tab. So repeat steps ... poof. I did it three times in a row, sent feedback + console line items from that time to Apple.

Instances of prior crashes were also primarily related to opening search results in new tabs for me. But, it would also happen with other sites, whether it is a mainstream blog or forum. Just less frequent.

Since I reset Safari a few days ago, it has yet to vanish on me.

Memory use between Safari and Web Process is still rampant (GBs of RAM to display web pages???), but that's a different matter.

It is smt strange about this bug. Different actions help different people but with the same problem. I dont have java installed at all. Its not crashing since I disabled Safari option in iCloud preferences 3 weeks ago. It used to crash every day. People say its not the case and its still crashing for them and for some reseting safari helps. When I tried reseting Safari, it would crash 2 times in a row after that.

Update.

I spoke with AppleCare yesterday, their engineering people got back to them about the issue that was submitted on my behalf.

The word was they are aware of the issue and are working on a solution. In short, "we are aware of it, and are working on it."

It hasn't affect me as badly lately, I've not tried to replicate the issue so that might have something to do with it. However, I strongly suggest sending feedback to Apple directly about this issue, especially if you can replicate it with a specific list of steps.

Safari 6.0.3 is out... it's included with 10.8.3.

http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1640

Safari 6.0.3

Safari 6.0.3 is included in the OS X Mountain Lion v10.8.3 Update and contains fixes that improve performance, stability, and security, including:

  • Improves scrolling on facebook.com
  • Improves scrolling while zoomed in on a webpage
  • Improves performance on webpages with plug-in content
  • A fix for an issue that could cause the inaccurate appearance of an alert that bookmarks can't be changed
  • A fix for an issue that could cause duplicate bookmarks to appear on an iOS device after editing bookmarks with Safari in OS X
  • A fix for an issue that permitted users to access unfiltered search results when searching from google.com when Parental Controls are enabled
  • A fix for an issue that could prevent Safari from restoring the last position on a webpage a user navigated back to

I do not want to speak too soon but I have not yet been able to replicate any crashes or disappearances with Safari 6.0.3.

I have been experiencing this for a long time. Its probably a "sampling bias" but i think the problem mostly repeats when i try to open a new tab by clicking links from google search or especially google reader. But as others already mentioned i dont see clear pattern. Sometimes it crashes 5-6 times in a row, and sometimes I can open at least 2-3 as many tabs without crashing or before crashing. I like to use tabs and I always have multiple open, so this really anoys me!

Could it have something to do with the fact that I have SSD, I didnt have the problem before installing SSD.

Greets!

I've just experienced my first crash using Safari 6.0.3, not been as regular as before, but just to let you all know...there are still crashes with the latest version.....

Make sure that you submit feedback to Apple about it: http://www.apple.com/feedback/safari.html

Make sure to include the following data:

  • What you are doing when it crashes.
  • What plug-ins (if any) you have installed.
  • Make and model of your Mac
  • What specific websites (if any) that cause this crash to happen.

I've uptaded Mountain Lion and Safari hasn't crashed. It's been two days.

I opened lots of other apps (iPhoto, Mail, iTunes, Pages and Keynote) while browsing to see if it was related to having only 2GB of RAM on my MacBook. My Mac was obviously pretty slow, but Safari didn't crash while I opened new tabs or opened reader.

I don't know if it's solved, but hopefully it won't happen anymore.

I've not experienced any further crashes for two days now.....I dont' want to tempt fate, but I think v6.0.3 has sorted the crashing problem! Fingers crossed!

Now if I could only work out how to block pop-ups (even when I have it checked and Glimmerblocker does nothing!), then Safari would be perfect, but that's for another thread! 🙂
