Mountain Lion Screen Freeze

Hello,

the cursor freezes sometimes, but even when it moves I cannot make anything happen with it except Shut Down, the track pad is unresponsive, and the screen is frozen, and sometimes there are some problems with graphics:

This is what happens repeatly before the boot time:

Getting the same problem with a new retina MB Pro, running 10.7.4. Log repreatedly shows something like the following, with a hang in MAIN graphics engine:

Aug 27 17:06:41 .. kernel[0]: timestamps = 0x4ae7fb1

Aug 27 17:06:41 .. kernel[0]: Semaphore register values:

Aug 27 17:06:41 .. kernel[0]: VRSYNC: (0x12044) = 0x4ae7fb1

Aug 27 17:06:41 .. kernel[0]: RBSYNC: (0x 2044) = 0x0

Aug 27 17:06:41 .. kernel[0]: VBSYNC: (0x12040) = 0x0

Aug 27 17:06:46 .. kernel[0]: stampWait: Overflowed checking for stamp 0x4ae7fb4 on MAIN ring: called from waiting for blt buffer (3D blt)

Aug 27 17:06:46 .. kernel[0]: ring control = 0x0000f001 enabled, auto report disabled, not waiting, semaphore not waiting, length = 0x010 4KB pages

Then, after little while, switches to hang in BLT graphics engine:

I know it's a stretch, but do any of you possibly have a machine with a defective GPU? A while ago there was an issue with Nvidia GPUs causing screen tearing or no video. I had one of these machines and I experienced what you guys are, simply my screen freezing.

MacBook Pro 15-inch and 17-inch models with NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics processors

  • MacBook Pro (17-Inch, 2.4GHz)
  • MacBook Pro (15-Inch, 2.4/2.2GHz)
  • MacBook Pro (Early 2008)

Do you have one of these qualifying machines?

If not, does the issue still occur if you create a new user and log in on there? I know I asked that earlier but I think only one guy replied.

Also, are you using Chrome by chance?

Aug 27, 2012 5:41 PM in response to Anthony Tomasino

The retina MB Pro has Intel HD graphics 4000, and NVIDIA GT650M. Unlike the others, I'm still running Lion. Not using Chrome (my crashes have all been while scrolling in Safari). I am seeing a lot of core graphics error log messages from Safari of the form:

8/27/12 5:59:57.167 PM [0x0-0x8008].com.apple.Safari: Aug 27 17:59:57 ...local WebProcess[248] <Error>: CGContextSetLineDash: invalid dash array: at least one element must be non-zero.

I had one of the 15 inch MB Pros with the defective GT8600M GPUs, and I don't remember it being this way -- it consistently froze when it was plugged into a projector via a long cable. This is very random, and doesn't seem to be affected by external monitors being attached.

Mine seem to have been happening once a week but now it's happened both yesterday and today. For me it has only happened since getting Mountain Lion.

I'm on a 27" iMac - late 2009.

With mine, the cursor moves (doesn't change icon though - eg I was stuck with a type cursor) and my music still plays in the background.

So frustrating especially seeing as though its my work computer. Doesn't happen on my 13" MBP with ML.

hi again Apple Experts..I was just reading a PDF document, no more, and the problem appeared again... again my logs...

maybe, Have you identified this problem?..this happens randomly, at this time I have not a kind of pattern in order to understand this behavior...If you need more information about my MB I could post it again.

I hope i'm don't jynx myself here but i havent had any freezes for 2 days straight. That's a record since before the freezes would be daily or even twice a day. And that's to say I use my laptop from 9 in the morning til 10 in the evening.

I don't know what could be the solution, if there is a solution at all here. Maybe I get a freeze sometime later.

I did use Onyx app to clean the system. Delete caches, verify disks, repair permissions etc.

Anyway, I hope we can put a finger on the problem soon and have a concrete culprit. This guessing isn't really getting us anywhere.

Aug 28, 2012 11:42 AM in response to sdaza

same problem here, on a iMac 2.66 GHz, Intel Core i5

basically with Mail, after quitting Mail runs OK again

- deleted cache

- reset pram

- safe booted

- ran Yasu

no improvement (only temp. after deleted cache)

randomly freezes, activity then shows NO cpu use, after 0,5-2 minutes runs again for 10-40 secs,

search in mail seems to induce it inmedeately.

no problem on

- 2.66 GHz Intel core 2 duo / 4 Gb iMac

- 2.4 GHz Intel core 2 duo / 4 Gb

all running 10.8.1

any clue?

I was really hoping that 10.8.1 would fix this for me as well but it did no such thing. It seems to be less frequent or I've just gotten lucky but it is certainly not fixed.

Ive reset everything that can be reset, had the hardware checked at the Apple Store and even done a fresh install.

Best I think we can do at this point is wait until 10.8.2 and hope for the best.

Aug 29, 2012 12:09 AM in response to andres.luna

I have the similar problem and log with my MBP(2011) 13" after i upgrade to Mountain Lion.

Both 10.8 and 10.8.1.

System freeze rendomly 2~3 times and have to reboot via the power button.

Since the 10.8.1 does not solve this problem, i find a 10.8.2 beta upgrade on the net and install it for the test.

After 3 days test my system works just fine as before without any freeze.

So i think the 10.8.2 upgrade may worth to wait for who have this freeze problem.

Hope the official 10.8.2 upgrade coming soon 🙂
