Mountain Lion Screen Freeze

Hi everyone,

same problem with exact same log on my rMBP :-(

I'm having the same annoying problem with MBA mid 2011. The symptom is the "media ring overflow" in dmesg, and various funky hangs. The onset of the problem is during the system wake up. Clearly it's an intel graphics driver bug. Apple, please fix this, don't become Microsoft!!!

I have rMBP 15'' (basic configuration) running OS 10.8.2.

Software:

I have Chrome but I hardly ever use it. I'm pretty much all day long on Safari.

Yes, I use Mail.

I'm pretty sure APPLE is just STALLING US! Just as I decided to give my rMBP to service, I hear that an actual diagnosis is not covered by AppleCare as long as there's no faulted hardware.

THIS PROBLEM NEEDS TO BE SOLVED! I can't work or do a presentation without fearing that everything could disappear at any moment.

If all we have done didn't work for us, we might need to change our course! I'm pretty new to Apple world and I don't know what else can be done. If nothing, we should not hesitate to take LEGAL ACTION as this problem costs us a lot of MONEY, TIME and ENERGY!

I strongly hope, it won't come to this 'ultima ratio'.

Hmmm...thought I had resolved this by installing 8GB of memory, but the issue still started again.

I had enough yesterday, so I started from scratch by re-formatting my drive and doing a clean install of Mountain Lion followed by all the updates. I am now running 10.8.2. I went into Safari to start downloading a few programs I use and hey presto - it froze! This is on a completely new install with no Firefox, Dropbox or Flash installed.

Really frustrated now. It seems this is definately a problem with ML.

I have a 2009 iMac with 4GB of RAM running on 10.7.5. Given the issues seen here on this forum (Freezing etc) is it worth the risk installing ML given that Lion is running very well with very few if any issues?

If something did go wrong being a novice at iMac operating system rectification I would be well and truly stuck!

Yeah.. When I enabled bluetooth this morning and turned on both my wireless keyboard and mouse the system frooze up. I was like "whaaat? Nooo, not this again!" Completeley surprised about that. Don't know why the system locked up only because of the bluetooth.. Hmm.

I'm seeing this on my 2011 Mac Mini media center. It was exhibiting this behavior soon after I set it up after transferring over everything from an older Mac Mini. It would have frequent lock-ups when switching between programs. I reformatted it and set it up completely fresh with Mountain Lion 10.8.2 and didn't transfer over anything and I'm still getting these symptoms with the same error in the console. Activity Monitor shows nothing using up the CPU or memory, and it occurs even with no programs running. The only software that has been installed is Plex and Transmission. No Chrome and I've never run Mail on it. It's connected to a TV via HDMI and I think the problem may be activated when the display becomes active by turning on the TV or changing inputs.

I gave up at the weekend after a series of lock-ups and managed to get a cheap copy of Windows 8 to install through boot camp. So far it has not suffered from any lock-ups at all, so I can only assume it is ML that's the issue and not my 2011 Macbook Pro. It's a real shame because Windows 8 is not a patch on the Apple OS.

I have Googled this subject and it appears we are not alone. There are loads of people with the same issue. Come on Apple, sort this out asap or I might think the unthinkable and format my drive completely and stick with Windows 8. At least it is reliable. Give me back Snow Leopard any day!

I am also having this issue on my Retina MacBook pro. I've had the logic board replaced, and done a reinstall of Mountain Lion and am still experiencing this issue.

Add me to those experiencing freeze issues. I have a rMBP, and this seems to happen after anytime I run a JAVA applet. My computer freezes for about 5 seconds, then runs fine again. If I disable graphics card switching, then the problem no longer occurs. Here is the error log from the console:

Turning off Automatic Graphics switching for me also fixes the issue. However, it's not running Java Applets that are causing it for me; there's several apps that appear to be triggering the issue for me.

So here was my experience with this problem (Feb-2011 MB Pro 15", out of warranty, no apple care bought):

- Xmas day i started runing into blue line and screen freeze

- i noticed it was happening when I put the video card under load (like a video or java-needing site)

- turned off the discrete card using gFX Status and was able to work weds and thurs after xmas like this

- Friday morning the computer refused to boot (stuck on gray screen)... tried to boot to ML USB install stick that I made, that got stuck on a blue screen

- Ponied up the $19 for an Apple Care, talked to someone, he thought "logic board", setup a Genius Bar appt for next day

- I went to Apple on Saturday the "genius" booted the MB via net boot, ran his diagnostics which came back clean. he then booted right into ML and it seemed to work, he pretty much said "all good, you have no problem"

- I spent a few minutes opening many tabs in Chrome, pulling up video sites, bam, MB locks up and he sees this.

- he talked about logic board replacement, quoted me the $350 to fix

- because of the New Year holiday, they didn't ship a box out to me until Weds the 2nd

- Thurs I get the box and immediately send it back out via FedEx overnight

- Friday I get an exception that it was my hard drive's fault (an OWC SSD drive that I purchased and installed)

- Called Apple Care back pretty angry, got a supervisor, she had another box overnighted to me on Friday, which I got this past Saturday, she also asked me to undo the SSD install

- Put the original HD back in, packed up the box, ready to send out this morning

- I was heading out the door to go to a nearby Office Max that offeres FedEx service and I notice/realize: they didn't include a shipping label as promised

- called Apple Care back this morning, pretty upset, they just sent out a label overnight

- so now it won't be tomorrow until i get the label to ship it back to them, pushing my total down time to 2 weeks (at least)

so d-mn frustrating

I have been having this problem for probably like six months now. Any solution to it yet?

Im having the same issue here I was watching a youtube video and then everything started to spaz out and then froze. I had to hard reboot the machine, after the reboot i opened the terminal and checked the recent system logs and found that there was some sorta overflow and the graphics engine started to bug out. Ill try and keep my eyes open and see if i can't find out what might be tripping up the kernel.
