My HP Officejet J4680 is now useless in OS X 10.8, has anyone had success in getting the HP printer to work in Mountain Lion

I recently installed Mountain Lion, now my printer/fax/scanner is useless. If anyone has been able to fully use an HP Officejet J4680 please let me know how to get it to work, I am strongly considering on restoring my iMac to Snow Leopard where I can take advantage of my peripherals.

Have you installed the HP software from CD or download or was the device already pre-installed in previous OSX version and then you upgrade to Mountain Lion?

You should actually use the drivers via HP Printer Driver Update - this can installed via ASU. You can then print, fax and also scan via Image Capture. This document from HP might be helpful: Installing and Using the HP Printer on a Mac with Mountain Lion

I uninstalled the HP software after I upgraded to Mountain Lion and have installed the HP software update from Apple that was downloaded from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL907. In addition to the HP software update, I checked for Apple software updates by clicking the Apple Logo and then selecting check for updates, none were found. After I installed the HP software update from Apple, I was able to install the HP Officejet J4680 by printer model and IP address but my iMac would not find the printer on my wireless network. After the printer was installed I still cannot print anything nor is there even the ability to scan in Preview nor are there any devices listed in Image Capture. I am still considering restoring my computer back to Snow Leopard where everything truly worked as it should, additionally I also have Windows Computers in the residence that still have printer and scanning functionality.

Can you provide the IP addresses of the printer (WIFI), the mac, and the router, please? Do you see the printer available in the Safari Bonour Browser? Go to Safari->Preferences->Bookmarks and check "Include Bonjour" under Collections. Then use the Bookmark icon in a browser window: you should see Collections on the left. Does Bonjour appear? If so, do you see your printer?

For users who's printer/scanner does not have a compatible driver from their manufacturer:

How do I scan or print with the driver from Apple Software Update?

Depending on your printer and the type of driver update, you might need to scan in a different way than you did before you installed Mountain Lion.

Scan from the Print & Scan window:

  1. Place the item that you want to scan on the scanner glass, or load it into the automatic document feeder (ADF) if your printer has one.
  2. Click the Apple menu (User uploaded file# ), and then click System Preferences .
  3. Click Print & Scan (User uploaded file# ).
  4. Click your printer in the left pane.
  5. Click the Scan tab, and then click Open Scanner .
  6. Click Show Details . The details of the scan display, including options to change scan settings.Figure 5: Show Details scanning screenUser uploaded file# Image: Show Details scanning screen
  7. Change any settings as necessary, and then click Scan .
NOTE:Make sure to select either the Flatbed mode or the Document Feedermode, depending on your printer and how you plan to scan.

Hope this helps 🙂
