Q: How can I use an HP 1320 Series laser jet under Mountain Lion?

I installed Mountain Lion and it runs just fine. Then, I reconnected the HP 1320 Laser Jet printer that I have been using for several years unter prior versions of OSX. When I try to install the printer, I get a dialogue telling met that it is setting up the printer, followed by one telling me that it is looking for software on line. This leads to a message saying that the software is not available from the Apple Support Center.

I went to the Support Center and downloaded the latest drivers and installed them. That made no difference whatsoever. The cycle of trying to install, going looking for software, followed by telling me that it's not available simply repeats itself.

This printer has worked before. How do I get it going again?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion

The HP 1320 is listed as supported in the latest Apple "Printer and Scanner Software" which is accessible as a link near the beginning of this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4670

So I suggest deleting the printer from System Preferences --> Print & Scan and then try adding it once again as the "How to Add a Printer" section of the above article suggests.

I don't see any way to delete what isn't there. The 1320 does not appear in the list of printers. It does appear in the list of printers available to be added, but that list doesn't seem to offer a "delete" option.

If I select the printer from the list of printers available to be added, it starts the whole setting up the printer, find software, etc. process that doesn't work.

I did go to software updates in the System Preferences, but that tells me that my software is up to date. Trying the printer after that produced the same results.

My printers are connected via an Airport Extreme network. I have an HP Inkjet printer which works perfectly via that path. I disconnected the laser jet from the Extreme and reconnected it with the same results.

    Do you have further suggestions?

I restarted the computer and, voila, problem solved! FWIW restart was not suggested anywhere. On the other hand I've been around long enough that I should have known to try that!

    Case closed.
