You can't upgrade to iOS 4. You'll have to upgraded to iOS 5.1.1. You will need to connect your iPad to your computer and update through iTunes. The upgrade process will back things up first.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect to your computer & click on the "Update your device using iTunes".

Tip - You may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily. Then download and install the iOS update. After you update to iOS 5.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).

When you plug in your ipad to your computer(gfs), when you click the update button it will allow you to create a backup onto that computer before it installs ios5. Then when your done it will restore that backup saved on the ocmputer. Incase you loose anything, go into the appstore/itunes and go to purchased. Everything that you have previously purchased will be there for you to download(free). assuming you live in the usa
