Text Edit Documents on iCloud.com?

I started working with Text Edit documents for the first time in Mountain Lion. I found something a bit surprising but it could be that I am not properly saving text edit documents to the iCloud.

I am using OSX 10.8. I am signed up for iCloud and have the documents & data box checked in the iCloud Preference Pane. Text Edit is an iCloud savvy document.

I moved a Text Edit document into the Cloud by dragging it into the Open dialog pane in Text Edit. Thereafter I could open it and edit it in iCloud view of Text Edit's open dialog.

The surprise came when I signed into iCloud.com and could not find the document. Apple's knowledge article tells you to sign in and click the iWork icon to access your files. While I understand that non-apple files such as Word would not show up there I thought that text edit files could be accessed from the internet on any computer.

Will only Apple iWork files appear on iCloud.com or is there something I am missing about how to save Text Edit documents show they can be accessed from ICloud.com?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

You can only read them in another Mac with 10.8. iCloud page is for iWork documents, and you need iWork '09 (10.8) or iWork for iOS to use it

Yes - I find iCloud and IOS pretty disappointing overall. It would have been fantastic to be able to store music files (that I don't necessarily want to import into iTunes - i'm a professional composer) and be able to access those files on other devices (namely my iPhone)...seems that Apple becomes more and more 'consumer' oriented everyday leaving by the wayside the professional artists, musicians, etc... that helped to define why Apple is great. There are people that are interested in more than just sharing spreadsheets and their own pictures......

Hello,

First of all, "Lanny": There are far more constructive answers than that. Let me thank, for instance, "lingenfr" who shares (with all of us in this conversation) an alternative to Apple's lack of interest on giving TextEdit users the oportunity to enjoy iCloud with OSX's default word processor.

And of course, one also spects people at Apple or nearby (sort of saying) to know what Users think of their strategies.

In other words, I'd really like to know if there are other people missing TextEdit documents to be editable on iPad through iCloud.

Thanks.

PLEASE, APPLE!! MAKE IT POSSIBLE TO SEE AND EDIT TextEdit DOCUMENTS on an iPad! It is so absurd to be able to have TextEdit Documents on iCloud and not being able to edit them even when having Pages installed on the iOS device... Brrrr!

Make something about it, for Reason Sake!

Thank you (in adavance).

You didn't actually ask a question. You made a statement addressed to Apple.

Re Notes: It is oh-so-easy to delete one by mistake, with a chance move on the keyboard. There's also a pretty frequent failure to sync.

TextEdit is solid. It's plain. It's light. And it doesn't come and go on a whim.

iCloud is great for my email. But it still STINKS for documents. Mine are notes, and things to do, and bits of text. Pages is far too big a program for my little 8 second docs.

And I NEED it on my iPhone. And iPad. iCloud is a big bust to me. I work from all of them, all the time. I'm hoping for TextEdit incorporation into ios soon. Am I dreaming?

A final question. Do you think that Apple actually reads these discussions? I've been wondering for years. Thanks! 😀

Apple has actually done a fantastic job at integrating iCloud with OSX, iOS, etc. We need to change the way we think about iCloud integration. Instead of accessing iCloud via a browser (not so integrated), you just need to open TextEdit, click File > Open, and when that dialogue opens click the "iCloud" button on the top-left of the window. You can now browse, open, and edit iCloud-saved documents right in TextEdit, right on your desktop (pretty darn integrated). They've integrated it so thoroughly in OSX that we seem to overlook it.

Hope that helps.

**This particular comment pertains to TextEdit only, so you may have to check on the same functionality with other programs.**

I see, so the fact that I can't open a text document with a text editor from anything other than an apple device isn't a deficiency, it's a "feature". Excellent. Please read the thread and not just the last post. This situation is ridiculous. I understand not being able to open an apple-unique format, but a text document or other widely used format is a bit nuts. For the amount I have invested in apple products, iCloud should at least work as well as what I can get for free (ex: Google Drive or Dropbox). This is not an apple troll or fanboy/fangirl thread. It is a specific issue. Please stick to the topic.

iCloud does not offer the same services as Dropbox or Google Drive, not a bug or feature, just a fact. Use the service that does what you ned, no point complaining about others that don't.

There is no iCloud integration in Snow Leopard or lower. So it was either too involved for Apple to make iCloud integration possible in the older OS' or they want everyone to move to Mountain Lion. That's fine except Mountain Lion won't run on my 2006 Mac Pro. Supposedly there is icloud integration in regular Lion and Lion will run on my machine BUT Lion is no longer available for purchase from the apple store nor the App Store (I've read that I'm going to have to call tech support to purchase a copy).

I meant to add that for me this integration of iCloud is hardly "seamless". In essence I will have to jump through a lot of very NON user friendly hoops to enjoy the user friendly features (eg iCloud integration) because I haven't had the time nor $$$ to upgrade to a new machine. Again going back to my original post I am pretty disappointed in how apple has approached this.

Yes; I cannot understand why Apple would let me, in fact encourage me, to save a TextEdit document from my iMac to iCloud, and then not let me even see it from my iPad. This seems illogical and sloppy to me. Yes; I want to be able to see, open and edit it from my iPad!

I know that Apple does not seem to pay much attention to users, and does not seem to browse posts in Apple Support Communities giving helpful explanations and advice, but can anyone expain why Apple would have done this?

Thanks

Any way to access an iCloud TextEdit document under Lion (10.7)? That is the most recent version of OS X installable on my MacBook. If not, then why would anyone with a variety of Macs, not all of which can use Mountain Lion, ever bother with iCloud rather than, say, DropBox? I mean, I love my Macs and my iPhone and all, but sometimes Apple really seems to have its head up its ***.

I use text edit a lot when I'm just copy and pasting text for other programs and would also like to be able to access these docs on my iOS devices. But since I do have pages on all my macs and iOS devices its probably easier just to start using pages for everything in place of text edit. I try to adjust my work flow to utilize the power of the apps the way they are. As much as I would like to have one app do everything I need I find myself now having iWork apps on every device (awesome) working in iCloud. I have a google drive account for collaboration for editing docs in real time at the same time. I have a Box account to have the ability to email attachments to a folder and sync it to my desktop. Also being able to embed a file in a website. A Dropbox account synced to my desktop because it updates faster than box. Good for FileMaker Pro development. The point is all these apps have have pros and cons. All cloud based and all work great on my macs, iPad and iPhone. Try not to get to frustrated waiting for one app to do everything you want. Hope this helps
