Just click on the icon, maintain the pressure and drag to wherever you want. To lose the item, release the pressure half way up the screen. It will disappear in a puff of smoke. Make sure you don't do this with Apps integral to the system.
On the other hand, If the app has a small arrow attached, it is an alias and providing you have another in your applications folder, that can go to.
removing icons from the doc only removes an alias from the dock, it wont delete the original
When I click and hold, I am presented with 3 options: Open, Open at Login, and Show in Finder.
Thanks; I don't need the original removed. I need a neat dock with the programs lined up in a certain order.
Are you dragging it off the Dock then? No Remove from Dock option along with Open, etc.???
Try holding CMD or alt when dragging off the Dock... can never remember which one!
So what is the problem. Simply click and drag the icons to a place you find convenient within the dock.
Thanks. For some reason I can't move them!
You deserve that castle for your efforts.
Thanks . . . I'm thinking it's got to be something along those lines.
Don't know how this could have happened spontaneously, but it may be the Dock has become locked.
Open Terminal in Utilities and copy/paste to unlock the Dock.
defaults write com.apple.dock contents-immutable -bool false;killall Dock
Then hit return.
It might be you'll first have to lock it in order to unlock it. So if the above doesn't work, substitute "true" for "false," then run the original command above with "false" once again.
Much obliged!

That's OK. Glad it worked.
