"WHINE INSIDE"

Dear Apple and Fellow Mac Users,

This whine issue is out of hand.

What is most offensive is Apples attempts to deny and cover up a very obvious (whine) problem.

What do they expect with a 3,000 dollar computer.

Its getting and gaining huge publicity, and as a consumer I am glad. Apple needs to fix this, admit its a problem and figure out what to do and ensure all of us they will fix our computers (whine)

Any aspiring artists wanna make me a "Whine Inside" Logo?

Ill be starting a website in a month if apple continues to ignore this problem.

macbookpro, Mac OS X (10.4.5), its noisy

according to that poll...

my theory earlier looks like it might hold out. The
younger you are, the more susceptable to hearing it
you are. Some people are baffled as to why I cant
sleep when a picture tube tv is on nearby (even rooms
away with closed doors). There are insanely high
pitched noises that I hear and really irritate me. My
mom and her generation never hear a peep.

pshaw... old people.

Ah, you young whippersnappers and your blanket statements. 😉 I sent soundroi a copy of the recording of my non-whining MacBook. Having listened to soundroi's posted recording, I recognize that whine as being just like the processor whine from my G5...but not from the MacBook. And, being a Middle School teacher, I've even recruited my students to take a listen up close, and they don't hear a whine coming from my MacBook. To sum up, I don't hear a whine, and 41 young and discerning ears don't hear one either.

A general comment: I commiserate with those who have 'whiny' MacBooks, but I'm getting a little tired of those frustrated individuals labelling the whine-free folk as 'deaf' or clueless or even liars. Yes, you are unhappy and deserve to have the problem worked out, but don't take your unhappiness out on those of us who support you but don't have the problem.

How close must you be?

I listened the recording linked at the...

http://media.putfile.com/MacBook-Pro-whine-issue

...link I didn't hear anything akin to what my MBP sounds like on boot or during operation.

I think I hear it... the recording seems almost like white noise, though, until there seems to be a sudden 'dropoff' at around 38 seconds and then, at about 44 second it seems to kick in louder... and then at 56 seconds after two 'taps' (keystrokes? mic tapping against something?) the sound increases again?

I know I don't have the problem and I feel the pain of those who do - if I had the whine I would return the machine toot sweet (tout de suite?) and not accept it back until repaired - no matter how long it takes. There's simply no way I could live with the noise in that recording - it sounds like a stethoscope firmly planted at a strategic locale, so loud that it makes my "wind tunnel" Power Mac MDD G4 sound silent by comparison.

For you folks with the problem, I would insist on sending the machines back en masse so that Apple gets the message.

PEOPLE, YOU MUST READ THE THREAD BEFORE POSTING. I'VE MADE THE RECORDING OF THE WHINE,

IF YOU LOOK SOME POSTS BEFORE, YOU'LL FIND THE EXPLANATION OF THE RECORDING!!!!
1)MIC POSITION: 3-5 cm from the F2 Key.

2)LENGTH: 1 minute of whinning WITH TWO STOPS WHEN I DISABLE THE SECOND PROCESSOR.

3) There are no mic taps, is the trackpad button when pressing to disable the second processor. White noise? Oh, God, as you should know, white noise spreads equally through all frequencies. This noise is 6-7 KHz resonating.

PLEASE BE SERIOUS, THIS IS NO JOKE. THOUSANDS OF USERS ARE COMPLAINING ABOUT THIS. READ THE FORUMS BEFORE POSTING STUPIDITIES..

Agreed, the noise isn't loud, but it is nevertheless extremely grating. I am not a picky person, nor am I especially sensitive to noise, but this sound, as many, many people can attest, is grating on the nerves. This said, the fixes (opening and closing the mirror widget, etc.) do provide a fix, and Apple, from what i gather, is coming out with a firmware patch that will solve this issue.
If you don't have the problem, congratulations!I am very happy for you. Just please don't try to imply that people who do have the problem are being unreasonable or wacky for wanting their brand new, rather expensive machines to function properly.

Before over-reacting, and even if the tool for which I gave a link to has a humouristic aspect, you should have understood that this tool can in fact also help detect the sound, as it plays a little music using the issue discussed here, it'll help people hear it when it's present.

And I DID KNOW THAT YOU MADE RECORDING OF THE WHINE, PLEASE STOP WHINING YOURSELF!

AND STOP USING CAPS!!!! PLEASE!!!!

PS: When I said the sound is quiet, I was speaking about the Power Supply sound on a PowerBook G4 1.25GHz NOT of the MBP "whining" sound which is a bit louder than the Powerbook G4.

PS2: Anyway, the appreciation of the irritability of this sound is highly subjective, and you should respect people that find it acceptable as it's a matter of personal tolerance. They have the right to find it tolerable, just as much as you have the right to find it highly irritating.

So here is my point. Whether a customer spends $100.00 or $2,500.00, he/she has the 'right' to expect things to work as they should. Issues such as high pitch noises, left fan is always on, warped lid, random shutdowns, gets hot quickly, Safari exhibits some odd behavior, Airport reception problems, are all egineering issues that Apple should of crrected prior to shipping. I am quite certain these items are being corrected on the manufacuritng line as we talk. It is Apple's responsibility to either repair or replace any MacBook Pro that exhbitis these issues (whether or not the MBP was purchased directly from Apple for a authorized re-seller) It is clear to me that these defects are not random but in fact quite widespread amongst the first production runs. (I too have these issues on my MBP).

I normally do not post messages on boards, but as a long time mac user (i had a 128K!), I feel it is my duty to let apple know what's going on.

VTG,

The ONLY thing I will agree with in your post is that it really ***** that you can't even buy On-Site repair. I have always had On-Site repair on my Dell products, and you are right, they are there the next day fixing things. (I wonder how in the heck you got Dell to pay for a coffee spill? That is clearly not their fault...)

BUT - I've owned a total of 14 different Dell products over the years. I've purchased at least 200 for my business. And I will tell you this, the rate (or percentage) of failure among Dells is way beyond that of Apple. I've only had two personal Apple computers, however, I've had dozens of iPods. No once have I had a call into Apple for a repair (knock on wood!). I just can't tell you how many times I've fought and struggled with the Dell folks over "issues". When I call Apple support (for a question), I get a live person on the phone in a very short period of time. Dell might take an hour and at minimum is 20 minutes.

So, it's not as rosey as you make it sound "on the other side of the fence". I agree, it sounds bad how some of the MBP issues are being handled - and I admit, that concerns me, but I'll take my PB or MBP over any Dell Notebook any day of the week, month or year.

Bob
