So like a lot of people here, I got some water into my iPhone 5S. Left it overnight in a bag of rice and everything seems to be working fine apart from the fact that the phone says headphones are connected when they aren't! I made a call and it only worked on loudspeaker, alarms play out loud but nothing else - music keyboard sounds, calls not on speaker etc. will work. I've tried everything suggested here, hairdryer on cool for a few minutes, blowing into the jack, tissue but nothing is working! I've also tried to put headphones in but they won't insert all the way which I thought was unusual, there's nothing stuck in there and i've tried to clear it out. It's definitely related to a moisture issue but I can't work out why the headphones won't insert! Sorry this is a bit rambly but i'm in a bit of a panic

Bobby Pin + toilet paper (must be strong). Stick it in the headphone slot and leave it for a few minutes. Problem fixed itself.

Thank you so much for this tip. After trying many other tactics this worked on the first try. You saved me a lengthy trip ( 1 hr 30 mins one way ) to my closest Apple store. I really appreciate it!

Same thing happened to me after a day at the beach. I sucked really hard and now it works! I had tried a q-tip and toilet paper prior and none of those worked.

i bought a waterproof case but it wasn't a life proof because Im not trying to waste money and I was using it in the pool all day and then I saw that headphone thing and had a heart attack. When I saw your idea I thought you were crazy and then I though hey what do have to lose. The second this worked I was never so happy for the Internet. Thank you so much for the help

I just suffered from this problem. what i did is i  took Q tip( Air bud) , since it is thick earlier, remove some cotton from it so that it will exactly fit into the jack then push it into the jack till the end and move there( make a circular move or sometime directly forcefully insert into the jack n then remove it), you will notice black material coming out with the cotton, remove it with many attempts and then check whether the problem solved or not....you can wet the  cotton sightly but don't make it heavily.

My problem got solved in very short time. Hope this works for you too!

Just created an account to say thanks! I got caught in the rain today and then several hours later my iPhone receiver wouldn't work. The volume adjustment said "headphones" when nothing was plugged in. Based on the advice here, I rolled up a tissue very tightly and stuck it in the headphone jack, then pushed it in as far as it would go using a paperclip. When I removed the tissue, the receiver worked! Thanks for the advice, everyone - you saved me a trip to the Apple Store!

Using a Qtip after removing the cotton from the head and inserting it into the headphone jack worked for me!

Thanks for all the helpful hints. It works for now but I think I am going to take my iPhone 6 to get it looked at under warranty. Issues like this should not be really happening. Should they on a phone less than 1 year old?
